A hungry lion was walking through the tall grass one morning. He had not eaten anything for two days, and his stomach was empty. He was looking for something to eat, anything at all.
Then he saw something soft and brown under a bush. It was a hare. She was curled up in a little ball, and she was fast asleep. Her long ears were lying flat on her back.
"Ah," thought the lion. "Breakfast." It was not a big breakfast, but it was easy to catch. He began to sneak toward her very slowly. He did not make a sound. He was only a few steps away. He opened his mouth to catch her.
At that moment, a big deer ran across the field in front of him. It was young and strong, and it was much bigger than the hare. The lion stopped. He looked at the small hare. Then he looked at the big deer.
"Why should I eat a little hare for breakfast," he thought, "when I can eat a big deer? That deer will give me food for three days!" So he left the hare and ran after the deer.
The noise of the lion's feet woke the hare. She opened her eyes, saw the lion running past, and jumped up. Quick as the wind, she ran away in the other direction and hid in a hole far away.
The lion was chasing the deer across the field. The deer was very fast. It jumped over rocks and ran between the trees. The lion ran and ran until his legs were tired and his heart was beating hard. But the deer was always a little bit ahead. At last, it ran into the forest and was gone.
The lion stopped. He was breathing heavily. "Oh well," he said. "I still have my little breakfast waiting for me." He walked all the way back to the bush.
But the hare was not there. There was only a small round place in the grass, still warm from her body.
The lion sat down on the empty spot. He was hungrier and more tired than before. "It is my own fault," he said sadly. "I had food right in front of me. But I let it go, because I wanted something bigger. Now I have nothing at all."
The lion went to sleep that night with an empty stomach. And far away, both the deer and the hare were sleeping safely.
