Gauche played the cello in a small orchestra at a movie theater in a town. Everyone said he was the worst player in the orchestra. He was always a little late, and his sound was never quite right.
One day, the orchestra was practicing the Sixth Symphony for a big concert in the town. It was only ten days away. The conductor stopped the music again and again. "Cello! You are late! From the beginning again!" At last he said, "Gauche, your music has no feeling. It isn't angry, and it isn't happy. Please do something about it." Gauche held his cello tightly and almost cried.
That night, Gauche went home to his old mill house by the river, outside the town. He took out his cello and practiced as hard as he could until late at night.
Suddenly, someone knocked at the door. It was a big calico cat. It was carrying some green tomatoes from Gauche's own garden. "Mr. Gauche, you must be tired," said the cat. "Here is a present. Now, please play some Schumann for me. I will listen."
"Those are my tomatoes!" Gauche shouted. "And they aren't even ripe!" Then he said, "All right. I'll play." He closed all the windows and doors, and he played a wild, loud piece called "Hunting Tigers in India." The cat's eyes flashed. It ran around the room and hit the walls. "Stop! Please stop!" it cried. At last Gauche opened the door, and the cat ran out into the night.
The next night, a cuckoo came down through a hole in the ceiling. "Please teach me music," it said. "I want to learn the scale." "But you only say 'cuckoo,'" said Gauche. "It's not that easy," said the bird. Gauche played do-re-mi, and the cuckoo sang "cuckoo, cuckoo" with him. They practiced for a long time. Slowly, Gauche began to feel that the bird's sound was more correct than his own.
Gauche suddenly stopped. "That's enough! Go home!" The surprised cuckoo flew up and hit the window glass again and again. Gauche tried to open the window, but it was stuck. Finally he kicked it, and the glass broke. The cuckoo flew straight out into the dark and did not look back.
On the third night, a young raccoon dog came with two drumsticks. "My father said you are a kind man, and told me to learn music from you," it said. "Please play 'The Happy Coachman.'" Gauche played, and the raccoon dog kept time by hitting the cello with its sticks. Then it said, "Mr. Gauche, when you play the second string, you are always a little late. It makes me trip." Gauche was surprised. "Yes, maybe you're right," he said sadly. "This cello is not very good."
On the fourth night, a mother field mouse came with a tiny baby mouse. The baby was sick, and its eyes were closed. "Please, Mr. Gauche, make my child well," she said. "But I'm not a doctor," said Gauche. "Oh, but you are curing everyone!" said the mother. "When you play your cello, the animals under your floor listen, and they get well. The rabbit's grandmother got well. The raccoon dog's father got well. Even the mean old owl got well."
"Really?" Gauche said. He had no idea. He put the baby mouse inside the cello through its hole, and he played a strong, loud song. When he stopped, the baby mouse ran out with its eyes open and shining. The mother mouse cried for joy, and Gauche gave them some bread.
Ten days later, the concert was a great success. The people clapped and clapped and wanted one more song. The conductor turned to Gauche. "Gauche, go out and play something." "Me?" Gauche thought they wanted to laugh at him. He walked out angrily and played "Hunting Tigers in India," just as he did on the night of the cat.
The hall was silent. Everyone was listening. When he finished, Gauche hurried back, feeling ashamed. But the conductor said, "Gauche, that was wonderful. Ten days ago, you played like a baby. Now you play like a soldier." The other players came and said, "Well done, Gauche."
Late that night, Gauche went home. He opened the window and looked far into the sky, in the direction where the cuckoo had flown. "Oh, cuckoo," he said. "I'm sorry about that night. I wasn't really angry at you."
