Deep in the forest, there lived a big, fierce lion. All the animals were afraid of him. But one day, something strange happened to him. He saw the daughter of a woodcutter picking flowers near her little house. She was singing a song, and her hair was shining in the sun.
The lion stopped and stared. His heart began to beat fast. "She is the most beautiful thing in the world," he thought. "I am going to marry her."
The next morning, the lion walked up to the woodcutter's house and knocked on the door with his paw. The woodcutter opened it, and his face went white.
"Good morning," said the lion, with a big smile. "I love your daughter. I want to marry her. Please say yes."
The woodcutter was shaking. He did not want his daughter to marry a lion. But he was also afraid to say no. "If I refuse, he will be angry," he thought. "Then he may eat us all." So he thought very hard for a moment.
"Mr. Lion," he said slowly, "you are a fine animal. But my daughter is very gentle, and she is afraid of your long teeth and your sharp claws. If you really want to marry her, you must take out your teeth and cut off your claws. That is my only condition."
The lion was so much in love that he did not stop to think. "Is that all?" he said. "Then I will do it today!" He went away, and he did what the woodcutter asked. It hurt, but he was happy, because he was dreaming of his wedding.
A few days later, he came back to the house. He had no teeth and no claws now. "Here I am," he said. "Now can I marry your daughter?"
The woodcutter looked at him carefully. The lion's mouth was soft and empty. His paws were round and harmless. The woodcutter was not afraid anymore. He picked up a big stick, and he ran at the lion.
"Go away!" he shouted. "Get out of here and never come back!"
The poor lion could not bite, and he could not fight. So he turned and ran back into the forest as fast as he could. He was never fierce again.
