I am a cat. I do not have a name yet.
Where was I born? I have no idea. I only remember that I was crying "meow, meow" in a dark, wet place. It was there that I saw a human being for the first time.
Later I learned that this human was a shosei, a student who lives in someone's house and does small jobs for the family. People say shosei are the roughest kind of human. But at that time I did not know this, so I was not afraid. He picked me up and put me on his palm. I remember feeling as if I were floating in the air.
As I sat on his palm, I looked at his face. That was my first look at a human face, and it seemed very strange to me. A face should be covered with nice soft fur, but his was smooth and shiny, like a teakettle. In the middle of it, something stuck out, and from two holes in that thing, smoke came out now and then. I found out much later that this was called smoking tobacco. It made me cough.
Then suddenly everything began to move very fast. My head went around and around, and I felt sick. When I could see again, the student was gone. My mother and my brothers and sisters were gone, too. I was alone in a field of bamboo grass.
I was hungry and cold, so I began to walk. I found a hole in a bamboo fence and crawled through it into a garden. That was how I came to this house.
The house had a maid, a woman who did the cooking and cleaning. She did not like me at all. Every time I came into the kitchen, she picked me up and threw me outside. Every time she threw me out, I came back in. We did this four or five times.
Then the master of the house came out to see what the noise was. "What is all this?" he asked. "This stray cat keeps coming in," said the maid. "I throw it out, but it comes right back." The master looked at me while he pulled at the hair in his nose. "Then let it stay," he said, and he went back into his room. That is how I came to live here.
My master is a schoolteacher. People call him Kushami-sensei. Kushami means sneeze in Japanese, which is a good name for him. When he comes home from school, he goes into his study and stays there almost all day. His family thinks he is a great scholar who studies very hard.
But I know the truth. Sometimes I walk quietly into his study and look. Very often, he is asleep with his face on an open book, and there is a little river of drool on the page. He has a weak stomach, so his skin is a little yellow. After every meal he takes some stomach medicine. Then he reads two or three pages of a book and falls asleep.
"Being a teacher must be the easiest job in the world," I think. "If I were born a human, I would be a teacher, too. If you can sleep this much and still be a teacher, even a cat could do it." But my master tells his friends that nothing is harder than teaching.
My master loves to start new hobbies. He has tried writing haiku, singing English songs, and archery. None of them lasted long. One day, he decided to become a painter. A friend told him, "The secret of painting is to paint what you really see. Paint from life!" So my master bought some paints and began to look for something to paint.
The next morning, I was taking a nap on the veranda in the sun. When I opened my eyes a little, I saw my master looking at me very seriously and painting. I felt sorry for him, so I decided to help. I kept very still and pretended to be asleep.
He painted and painted. But after a long time, I needed to go to the bathroom very badly. I could not wait any longer. I stood up, stretched my legs, gave a big yawn, and walked slowly away.
"Bakayaro! You fool!" my master shouted. He always uses that word when he is angry. I did not think it was fair. I had helped him for so long. Later, I saw his painting. It did not look like me. It did not look like any cat at all.
And so I still have no name. But I will not ask for too much. I will live here quietly in this teacher's house, as a cat with no name.
