"Well, that man Xiang Yu did not have the makings of a hero."
Lu Matong, a general of the Han army, said this, stroking his thin beard. His face was long, and now it looked even longer. Around him, more than ten faces shone red in the light of a lamp in the middle of the tent. It was night in the army camp. All the faces were smiling, which was unusual. They were probably still happy about today's victory, the battle in which Xiang Yu, the great king of Chu, had died.
"Is that so?" said a man with a high nose and sharp eyes. There was a slightly mocking smile on his lips, and he looked straight at Lu Matong's face. For some reason, Lu Matong seemed a little nervous.
"Of course, he was strong. They say he could even bend a great stone pot at an old temple. In today's battle, too, I thought for a while that I would die. He killed Li Zuo, and he killed Wang Heng. Nothing could stop him. Yes, he was really strong."
"I see." The other man was still smiling, and he nodded calmly. Outside the tent, all was quiet. Except for a horn that sounded two or three times far away, not even the cry of a horse could be heard. Somewhere there was a smell of dry leaves.
"But," said Lu Matong. He looked around at everyone and blinked once, as if to show what a big "but" this was. "But he did not have the makings of a hero. Today's battle proves it. When Xiang Yu was driven to the Wu River, he had only twenty-eight horsemen left. They could do nothing against our huge army. And the village head at the Wu River came out and offered to take him across the river by boat, back to his homeland. If Xiang Yu had the makings of a hero, he would have crossed the river, even with shame. Then he would have built up his army again and come back. It was no time to worry about his pride."
"So having the makings of a hero means being good at counting, does it?"
Everyone laughed quietly. But Lu Matong did not lose heart. He took his hand from his beard, leaned back a little, and began to talk with lively gestures. Now and then he looked quickly at the man with the high nose and sharp eyes.
"No, I don't mean that. Before the battle today, Xiang Yu said to his twenty-eight men, 'It is Heaven that is destroying me. It is not because I am not strong enough. To prove it, with only these few soldiers, I will beat the Han army three times.' And in fact, he fought not three times but nine times, and he won every time. In my opinion, that is cowardly. He blamed Heaven for his own failure. Heaven must be quite troubled!"
"If he had crossed the river, gathered the brave young men of his homeland, and fought for control of the country again, and then lost, it would be a different story. But he didn't. He could have lived with honor, and instead he died. I don't say this only because he was bad at counting. He tried to excuse everything by calling it the will of Heaven. That is what is wrong. A hero isn't like that, I think. Of course, I don't know what a scholar like Prime Minister Xiao He would say."
Lu Matong looked around proudly and was silent for a while. Everyone seemed to think he was right. They nodded lightly to one another and stayed quiet, satisfied. But among them, only the man with the high nose showed something unexpected in his eyes. He looked deeply moved. His black eyes began to shine as if with fever.
"Is that so? Did Xiang Yu really say that?"
"That is what I heard." Lu Matong moved his long face up and down. "Isn't that weak? Or at least, isn't it unmanly? I think a hero is someone who fights against Heaven."
"Yes."
"I think a hero keeps fighting even when he knows the will of Heaven."
"Yes."
"Then Xiang Yu..."
Liu Bang, the leader of the Han army, raised his sharp eyes and looked at the lamp flickering in the autumn night. Then, half to himself, he slowly answered.
"That is why he had the makings of a hero."
