There was once a man named Rufus who made things out of wood. One day, he made a statue of the god of money. It was small and smiling, and it had a bag of gold in its hand. Rufus painted it in bright colors. Then he took it to the market to sell.
He stood in the middle of the market and held it up. "Beautiful statue! Very cheap!" he called. But nobody stopped. People were busy buying bread, fish, and vegetables. They walked past him without looking.
An hour went by. Then two hours. Rufus was getting hungry and tired. "I need a better idea," he thought. So he climbed up onto a wooden box, and he shouted as loudly as he could.
"Come and see! Come and see! This is the god of money! He gives wealth to everyone who owns him! Take him home, and you will become rich! Gold will come into your house like rain!"
Now people stopped. A small crowd came to look at the statue. "Really?" said a young man. "Will he make me rich?" "Of course!" said Rufus. "Very, very rich!"
Then an old woman at the front of the crowd lifted her hand. She was small, but her eyes were bright and clever.
"Excuse me," she said. "I have a question."
"Yes, madam?" said Rufus with a big smile. "Do you want to buy him?"
"If this god can really make people rich," said the old woman, "why are you selling him? Why don't you take him home and become rich yourself?"
The crowd went quiet. Everyone looked at Rufus. Rufus did not stop smiling, but his face turned a little pink.
"Well, madam," he said quickly, "it is like this. This god is very good, but he is very slow. He gives his gifts little by little, over many, many years. And I need money right now, today! I can't wait that long."
For a moment, nobody said anything. Then the crowd started laughing. The young man shook his head and put his money back in his pocket. One by one, the people walked away.
The old woman smiled at Rufus. "Young man," she said, "a good seller believes in what he sells. Make something that is truly useful. Then you will not need to tell stories."
Rufus thought about her words all the way home. The next week, he came back to the market with wooden spoons and bowls. He sold all of them before lunch.
