Mr. Red and Mr. Blue were enemies. Nobody knew why anymore. Maybe it started with a fight about a fence. Maybe it started with a fight about a cow. But for twenty years, the two men hated each other. They never spoke. When one walked into a room, the other walked out.
One day, both of them needed to travel to the same city across the sea. And, by bad luck, there was only one ship. When Mr. Red got on the ship, he saw Mr. Blue. When Mr. Blue saw Mr. Red, his face became dark.
"I am not going to sit near him," said Mr. Red. So he went to the very back of the ship and sat down there.
"I am not going to sit near him," said Mr. Blue. So he went to the very front of the ship and sat down there. Now they were as far apart as possible.
For the first day, the sea was calm. But on the second day, the sky turned black. A terrible storm came. The wind was screaming, and huge waves were crashing over the ship. Water was coming in everywhere. "We are going to sink!" shouted the sailors. Everyone was running around and crying.
Mr. Red was holding onto the back of the ship. He saw the captain running past. He took hold of the captain's arm.
"Captain!" he shouted over the wind. "Tell me one thing! Is the ship going to sink?"
"I am afraid so!" shouted the captain.
"Then tell me," said Mr. Red, "which end of the ship will go down first? The front or the back?"
The captain looked at him strangely. "The front, I think!" he said. "The front is lower in the water!"
Then a strange thing happened. Mr. Red smiled. "Ah, good," he said. "Then I am not afraid to die. My enemy will die before me. I will have the pleasure of watching him go down first!"
The captain could not believe his ears. "You foolish man!" he shouted. "The whole ship is going down! Both of you are going to drown! Stop thinking about your enemy and help us throw out the water!"
Mr. Red looked at the captain. Then he looked at the water around his feet. Suddenly, he understood. He picked up a bucket and started to work. At the front of the ship, Mr. Blue picked up a bucket too.
All night, the two men worked side by side with the sailors. In the morning, the storm was over, and the ship was still floating. Mr. Red and Mr. Blue looked at each other, tired and wet. And for the first time in twenty years, they said, "Good morning."
