In a quiet pond, there was a small restaurant called The Lily Pad. It was the best restaurant for frogs in the whole forest. Every evening, frogs came from far away to eat there.
One evening, a large green frog named Mr. Hopper sat down at a table. He was wearing a little bow tie, and he looked very hungry.
A young waiter came to his table. It was his first day at work, and he was a bit nervous. "Good evening, sir," he said. "What would you like?"
"The soup of the day, please," said Mr. Hopper. "I have heard it is wonderful."
The waiter hurried to the kitchen. Soon he came back with a big bowl of hot soup. Mr. Hopper picked up his spoon. He looked into the bowl. Then he looked again. His face turned dark green.
"Waiter!" he shouted. Everyone in the restaurant stopped eating. "Waiter, come here at once!"
The young waiter ran back to the table. "Yes, sir? Is something wrong with the soup?"
"Wrong?" said Mr. Hopper. "Look at this! There is no fly in my soup!"
The waiter's face turned pale. "I am very sorry, sir!" he said. He ran to the kitchen and came back with a small plate. On it were three fat flies. "These are on the house, sir," he said.
Mr. Hopper smiled and dropped all three flies into his soup. "Now that," he said, "is a soup."
This story plays with a very old English joke. In the old joke, a person in a restaurant finds a fly in the soup and gets angry. But frogs love to eat flies, so Mr. Hopper gets angry because there is no fly in his soup! "On the house" means free, because the restaurant pays for it.
