Hana's cousin, Lucy, lived in Australia. One day, Hana's mother said, "Lucy is coming to visit us next week. She will stay for two weeks." Hana was excited. Then she was worried. Lucy spoke English, and Hana spoke only a little.
"I will learn English in one week," Hana said. She took the biggest dictionary in the house and opened it at the first page. "A, aardvark, abacus, abandon..." she read. After ten minutes, she was asleep on the dictionary.
「A、aardvark(ツチブタ)、abacus(そろばん)、abandon(捨てる)……」
The next day, she tried again. She watched English movies for six hours. She listened to English songs while she ate. She even talked to the cat in English. The cat did not answer.
On the day Lucy arrived, Hana was very tired. She had a long speech ready, but when she saw Lucy, she forgot everything. "Hello," she said. "Nice to meet you. The apple is red." Lucy looked surprised. Then she smiled and said slowly in Japanese, "Konnichiwa. Watashi wa... ringo?" Both girls burst out laughing.
That night, Hana's grandfather heard the story. "Hana," he said, "Rome wasn't built in a day." "What is Rome?" asked Hana. "A great city in Italy," said Grandfather. "It took hundreds of years to build. Big things take time."
So the two girls made a plan. Every day, Hana taught Lucy five Japanese words, and Lucy taught Hana five English words. They used the new words when they played, cooked and walked to the park. When they made mistakes, they laughed.
After two weeks, they could have short, simple conversations. When Lucy went home, they kept writing to each other every week, a little in English and a little in Japanese.
One year later, Hana visited Lucy in Australia. At the airport, she did not say "The apple is red." She ran to Lucy and talked for an hour without stopping.
"Rome wasn't built in a day." Big and important things take a long time, so do a little every day, and don't give up.
