Max and Leo had been friends since they were boys. One summer they decided to travel together across the mountains to visit a famous city on the other side. "We will look after each other," Max said, putting his arm around his friend. "Whatever happens, we will face it together."
Leo smiled. He was a small, quiet young man, and Max was much bigger and louder. Max loved to talk about how brave he was. During the first two days of their trip, he told Leo many stories about the wolves he had chased away and the robbers he had fought.
On the third day, the path led them into a thick forest. The trees were so tall that the sunlight could hardly reach the ground. Suddenly, they heard a loud crack. Something huge was moving through the bushes ahead of them.
A bear stepped out onto the path. It was enormous and brown, and it lifted its nose to smell the air. Then it looked straight at the two friends.
Max did not wait a single second. Without a word, he turned, ran to the nearest tree, and climbed up into its branches as fast as a squirrel. He did not look back. He did not reach down a hand to help his friend.
Leo was left alone on the path. He was too small and too slow to climb, and he knew that he could not run faster than a bear. His heart was beating wildly. Then he remembered something that his grandfather had told him long ago. "A bear will not touch a dead body," the old man had said.
So Leo threw himself face down on the ground. He lay completely still, and he held his breath.
The bear came closer. Leo could hear its heavy feet on the leaves. Then he felt its warm breath on his neck. The bear pushed him with its nose. It smelled his hair, his back and his ear. It stayed by his head for a long, long time, and Leo thought that his chest would burst.
But he did not move. At last the bear made a low sound, turned around and walked slowly back into the forest.
For a few minutes, nothing happened. Then Max climbed carefully down from the tree, brushed the dirt off his clothes and laughed nervously. "Well, that was exciting!" he said. "Are you all right? I saw the bear put its mouth right next to your ear. What did it whisper to you?"
Leo stood up slowly. He looked at his friend for a long moment.
"It gave me some very good advice," he said. "It told me never to travel with a friend who leaves me alone when danger comes."
Max's face turned red, and for once he had nothing to say. Leo picked up his bag and walked on toward the city by himself. He had lost a friend that day, but he had learned something that was worth much more. A true friend is not the one who talks the most. A true friend is the one who stays.
