Long ago, a great many frogs lived in a peaceful lake. They swam when they wanted to swim, they sang when they wanted to sing, and nobody told them what to do. You would think that they were the happiest frogs in the world, but they were not.
"Every other animal has a king," complained one old frog. "The lions have a king. The bees have a queen. Why don't we have one?" "Yes!" the others agreed. "We need someone who is great and strong to rule over us."
So they all lifted their faces to the sky and croaked as loudly as they could. "Great Jupiter, king of the gods! Please send us a king!"
High up on his cloud, Jupiter heard them and smiled. He knew how foolish the frogs were. He picked up a big log and dropped it into the middle of the lake.
SPLASH! The water flew high into the air, and huge waves crashed against the shore. The frogs were terrified. They dived to the bottom of the lake and hid in the mud. "What a powerful king!" they whispered to each other. "What a terrible noise he made!"
For a long time, no frog dared to come up, but the new king did not move. At last, one brave little frog swam up and looked at him carefully. The king was floating quietly on the water, and he did not shout or give any orders.
The little frog swam a bit closer, and then a bit closer. Finally, he touched the king with his foot, but nothing happened.
Soon all the frogs were sitting on top of their king. They jumped on him and danced on him and laughed at him. "This is not a king," they said. "This is just a lazy piece of wood. We want a real king, one who moves!"
So they called up to Jupiter again, and this time he sent them an eel. The eel was long and smooth, and he swam around the lake in a friendly way, saying kind words to everyone. But the frogs soon became bored with him too. "He is far too kind," they said. "A king should be strong and frightening, so we want a better king!"
Jupiter was becoming angry now. "These frogs are never satisfied," he said. "Very well. If they want a strong king, I will give them one."
The next morning, a tall gray heron landed at the edge of the lake. He had long legs, a long neck and a long, sharp beak. The frogs gathered around him excitedly. "At last!" they cried. "Look at him! This is a real king!"
The heron looked down at them with his cold yellow eyes. Then, very quickly, he bent his neck and caught a frog in his beak, and then another, and then another.
The frogs screamed and swam in every direction, but it was too late. Every day the heron walked slowly around the lake, and every day there were fewer frogs. They begged Jupiter to take their new king away, but this time Jupiter did not answer.
Before long, the lake was silent. There were no frogs left to complain.
