A little mouse lived in a dry hole at the edge of a meadow. One day, while she was looking for seeds, she met a frog who lived in a pond nearby. The frog was very friendly and very talkative, and he made the mouse laugh with his funny stories. Soon they began to meet every day, and the mouse thought she had found a wonderful new friend.
But the frog was not as kind as he seemed. He liked to play tricks on others, and he did not care if they got hurt. One morning, as he watched the mouse eating seeds, he had an idea.
"My dear friend," he said with a big smile, "we are such good friends that we should never be apart. Let us tie our legs together with this piece of grass. Then we can go everywhere together."
The mouse thought this was a strange idea, but she did not want to hurt her friend's feelings. So she let the frog tie her foot tightly to his own.
At first, the frog led her around the meadow, where the mouse usually found her food. They walked slowly and clumsily, because a mouse runs and a frog hops. The mouse laughed. "This is fun," she said, "but it is not very easy."
Then, little by little, the frog began to lead her toward the pond. The grass became wetter and the ground became softer. "Where are we going?" asked the mouse nervously. "I cannot swim, you know."
"Just a little farther," said the frog. "I want to show you something."
When they reached the very edge of the water, the frog suddenly jumped in, pulling the mouse with him. The mouse screamed and kicked, but the grass around her foot was too strong.
The frog was delighted. He loved the water, and he swam around and around, croaking happily, as if he had done something very clever. He did not even look at his poor friend. The little mouse fought hard to keep her head above the water, but she was much too small and weak. Soon she grew tired and stopped moving, and her body floated on top of the pond, still tied to the frog's foot.
High in the sky, a hawk was flying in slow circles. With his sharp eyes, he saw something floating on the pond. He dived down and caught the little mouse in his claws, and then he rose back into the air.
But the mouse was still tied to the frog. As the hawk flew up, the frog was pulled out of the water too. He hung in the air below the mouse, kicking his legs and croaking in terror.
"Let me go! Let me go!" he cried. But nobody could help him now. The hawk flew back to his nest on a high rock. And that evening he had a much bigger dinner than he had expected, a mouse and a frog together.
The pond became quiet again. Nothing was left on the water. The frog had planned to harm his friend, but in the end, the harm had come back to him as well.
