On May 31, 2026, eight birds with pale pink wings flew out of a large cage. This happened in Hakui, a city in Ishikawa Prefecture. They were toki, or Japanese crested ibises. It was the first time that toki had been released into the wild on Honshu, Japan's main island. The last wild toki on Honshu had been caught on the Noto Peninsula in 1970.
Toki were once common all over Japan. But hunting and the loss of the places where they lived made their numbers fall. In 1981, the last five wild toki in Japan were caught on Sado Island to protect them. Later, toki were bred in captivity with birds from China. They have been released on Sado since 2008. In 2019, the government changed their status from "extinct in the wild" to "critically endangered."
The toki is only one of many endangered species in Japan. Endangered species are kinds of animals and plants that may disappear forever. The Ministry of the Environment keeps a list of them, called the Red List. As of March 2026, 3,587 species in Japan were listed as threatened.
One of the most famous is the Iriomote cat. It lives only on Iriomote Island in Okinawa, an island covered with thick forests and mangroves. A writer found the cat in 1965, and scientists described it as a new kind of animal in 1967. A government survey estimated that there were only about 100 of these cats.
One of the biggest dangers for the cat is cars. A road that goes around part of the island was built in the 1970s. Since then, cats have been hit by cars almost every year. To protect them, tunnels have been built under the road so that cats can cross safely. There are also warning signs, and special lines on the road that make a noise to tell drivers to slow down.
In 2021, Iriomote became a World Natural Heritage site, together with Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, and the northern part of Okinawa Island. These islands were chosen because they are home to many rare animals that live nowhere else. Some people worry that more tourists may harm nature. So local people are discussing how to welcome visitors and protect animals at the same time.
There is good news from northern Okinawa, too. The Okinawa rail, or yanbaru kuina, is a bird that can hardly fly, and it was discovered in 1981. Mongooses, which people had brought to Okinawa long ago, and cats ate many of these birds. By 2005, only about 700 were left. Since then, people have caught mongooses and built fences to keep them out, and the number of birds has risen to about 1,500.
In Hokkaido, Blakiston's fish owl, one of the largest owls in the world, is also endangered. Around 1980, only about 70 were left, partly because many of the big old trees where they made their nests had been cut down. Since 1984, people have put up large nest boxes and given the owls fish in winter. By 2022, about 100 pairs had been found.
Protecting endangered species is not easy. It costs a lot of money, and it can limit what people do. For example, new roads, hotels, or farms may not be allowed in some areas. Some people ask whether so much money should be spent on a few animals when society has many other problems. Others answer that once a species disappears, it can never come back.
Ordinary people can help, too. Drivers on Iriomote can slow down. Pet owners should never let their pets go into the wild. When we visit nature, we can stay on the paths and take our trash home. Learning about the animals that live near us is also a good first step.
What do you think? Some people say that Japan should spend more money and effort to protect endangered species, because they are a treasure that can never be replaced. Others say that people's lives and the local economy should come first, because strict rules can make life difficult for people who live near nature.
