There was once a man who loved gold more than anything else in the world. He did not love his friends, because friends wanted dinners and presents. He did not love good food or warm clothes, because they cost money. He only loved gold.
One day he made a big decision. He sold his house, his furniture, his horse and even his winter coat. With all the money, he bought one large, heavy lump of gold. It shone in his hands like a little sun. "Now my treasure is safe in one piece," he thought happily. "Nobody can spend it, and nobody can steal it."
But where could he keep it? Banks could not be trusted, he decided, and a box under the bed was the first place that a thief would look. So late one night, he walked out to an old stone wall at the edge of a field. There, under the roots of a twisted tree, he dug a deep hole. He put the gold inside, covered it with earth and placed a flat stone on top.
After that, the miser visited his gold every single day. Sometimes he went twice a day. He would sit next to the wall, lift the stone, dig a little and look at the shining gold. He never took it out, and he never spent any of it. He just looked at it, smiled, and covered it up again.
Now, a young man worked on the farm near the field. He had noticed the old man who came to the wall so often. "Why does he sit by that old wall every day?" the young man wondered. "What is so interesting about a pile of stones?" One evening, he hid behind a bush and watched. When he saw the gold flash in the miser's hands, his eyes became very wide.
That night, the young man came back with a shovel. In ten minutes, the gold was gone, and so was he.
The next morning the miser arrived at the wall as usual. He lifted the stone. He dug. He dug more. The hole was empty.
The old man screamed. He pulled at his hair and fell on the ground. "My gold!" he cried. "My beautiful gold has been stolen, and everything I had is gone!" He cried so loudly that a neighbor came running across the field to see what had happened.
When the neighbor heard the whole story, he scratched his head. "I am sorry," he said, "but I do not understand. You never used this gold, did you?"
"Used it?" cried the miser. "Of course not! I would never spend it!"
"Then here is my advice," said the neighbor. He picked up a large gray stone from the wall and dropped it into the empty hole. "Come here every day and look at this stone. Pretend that it is your gold. It will be just as useful to you as the gold was."
"When the gold was here, you did nothing with it. So, really, what have you lost?"
The miser stared at the stone in the hole. For the first time in many years, he did not know what to say.
