High on a mountain in Greece, there was a hive where the finest honey in the world was made. The queen of the hive was very proud of it. "Our honey is so sweet," she often said, "that it is good enough for the gods themselves."
One day she decided to prove it. She filled a little golden cup with her freshest honey and flew up, up, up, past the clouds, until she reached Mount Olympus, where the gods lived. She flew into the great hall and bowed before Jupiter, the king of the gods.
"Great Jupiter," she said, "I have brought you a gift from my hive."
Jupiter tasted the honey, and his eyes grew wide. "This is wonderful!" he said. "It is even sweeter than the nectar that we drink here on Olympus. Little queen, you have made me very happy. Ask me for anything you like, and I promise that I will give it to you."
This was exactly what the queen bee had hoped for. She had been thinking about her wish for a long time.
"Thank you, great Jupiter," she said. "Here is my wish. Every summer, human beings come to our hive. They break it open and steal the honey which we have worked so hard to make. Please give me a sting, a powerful sting. Then, whenever a human tries to take our honey, I can sting him and kill him."
The hall became very quiet, and Jupiter's smile disappeared. He loved human beings, and he did not want them to be killed for a little honey. He was angry with the bee for having such a cruel wish. But he had made a promise, and a god must always keep his promises.
He thought for a long time. Then he spoke in a deep, slow voice.
"Very well," he said. "You will have your sting, and from today every bee will carry one. But listen carefully, little queen. Your wish has been granted, but it has a price. When you use your sting, it will stay in the wound that you have made. And when you lose your sting, you will die."
The queen bee's wings trembled. "Die?" she whispered. "But that is not what I asked for."
"No," said Jupiter. "You asked for the power to hurt others, and I have given it to you. But a wish to hurt others often hurts the one who makes it."
The queen bee flew slowly back down the mountain. She was not as happy as she had expected to be. That summer, when a farmer came to take honey from the hive, a young bee flew at him angrily. The farmer cried out and ran away with a red, painful spot on his hand. But the young bee fell to the ground, and she never flew again.
Since that day, honeybees have always had stings, but they do not use them easily. They have learned that a sting can cost them their life. That is why, even today, a bee will usually fly away from you if you leave it alone.
