One hot afternoon, a lion was resting in the shade of a tree. His eyes were half closed, and his tail moved slowly from side to side. All around him the other animals kept quiet, because nobody wanted to wake the king of the beasts.
Then a tiny gnat came flying by. He was so small that you could hardly see him, but he had a very big opinion of himself. He flew right up to the lion's nose and buzzed loudly.
"Hey, you! Lion!" said the gnat. "Everyone says that you are the strongest animal in the world. But I am not afraid of you at all. In fact, I am much stronger than you are."
The lion opened one eye and looked at the gnat. "Go away, little insect," he said lazily.
"Oh? You do not believe me?" said the gnat. "What is so special about your strength, anyway? You scratch with your claws and you bite with your teeth. Any angry cat can do that in a fight with its neighbor. I am far more powerful than you. If you do not believe me, let us fight and see who wins."
Before the lion could answer, the gnat made a high, sharp sound, like a tiny trumpet, and flew straight at the lion's face. He landed on the lion's nose, where there was no fur, and he stung him hard.
"Ow!" roared the lion. He swung his huge paw at his nose, but the gnat had already flown away. A moment later the gnat landed near the lion's eye and stung him again. Then he stung the inside of his ear, and then his nose again.
The lion jumped up in a fury. He roared and swung his paws in every direction. He scratched at his face with his sharp claws, but he could never catch the gnat. Instead, he only scratched himself. Soon his nose and cheeks were covered in painful marks that he had made with his own claws. At last, tired and hurt, the great lion lay down in the dust and gave up.
The gnat flew high into the air, buzzing a song of victory. "I have won! I have won!" he sang. "I have beaten the king of the beasts! I am the greatest fighter in the world! Now every animal will know my name!"
He was so busy singing and looking back at the lion that he did not look where he was going. Between two branches of a bush, a spider had made a large, fine web. The gnat flew straight into it. He tried to pull himself free, but the sticky threads only held him tighter.
From the corner of the web, a small brown spider came walking toward him.
"No, no!" cried the gnat. "This cannot be happening! I have just defeated the mighty lion, the biggest and strongest of all animals. And now I am going to be eaten by a little spider, one of the smallest creatures of all!"
The spider did not care about the gnat's victory. She had never heard of it, and she was simply hungry. And that was the end of the greatest fighter in the world.
