Long ago, a sailor set out on a long journey across the sea. To keep himself company, he took a pet monkey with him. The monkey was clever and funny. He climbed up the ropes, made faces at the sailors and copied everything that people did. Everyone on the ship laughed at his tricks.
For many days the sea was calm. But one night, as the ship was sailing near the coast of Greece, a terrible storm began. The wind roared, and huge waves crashed over the ship. At last, with a great crack, the ship broke apart. The sailors jumped into the dark water and swam for their lives, and the monkey jumped in with them.
The monkey could not swim well. He kicked his legs and waved his arms, but the waves kept pushing him under. He was sure that he was going to drown.
Then something large and smooth came up under him and lifted him out of the water. It was a dolphin. In those days, people said that dolphins loved human beings and often saved them from the sea. In the darkness and the storm, the dolphin had seen the monkey's face and hands, and he thought that the monkey was a man.
"Hold on," said the dolphin kindly. "I will carry you to land."
The monkey held on tightly, and the dolphin swam through the waves all night. In the morning, the storm had passed, and the sea was blue and calm. Far ahead, they could see the white buildings of a great city on the shore.
"That is Athens," said the dolphin. "Are you from Athens, my friend?"
The monkey wanted the dolphin to think that he was important. "Yes, I am," he said proudly. "In fact, I come from one of the oldest and most famous families in the city."
The dolphin was impressed. "Then you must know the Piraeus," he said. He was talking about the famous harbor of Athens, where all the ships came in.
But the monkey had never heard of the Piraeus. He thought it was the name of a person. He did not want to look foolish, so he answered quickly. "The Piraeus? Of course I know him! He is one of my best friends. We have dinner together almost every week."
The dolphin stopped swimming. He turned his head and looked carefully at the creature on his back. In the bright morning light, he saw the long tail, the hairy arms and the funny little face. This was not a man at all. It was a monkey, and a monkey who told lies.
"You are not a man from Athens," said the dolphin coldly. "You are a liar. I have carried you all night because I wanted to help a human being. I will not carry a liar a single wave farther."
And with these words, the dolphin dived deep under the water and swam away. The monkey was left alone in the middle of the sea, far from the shore that he had almost reached. He was never seen again.
On the beach, some of the sailors who had swum to safety looked out over the sea. They wondered what had happened to their funny little monkey. Only the dolphin knew, and he never told anyone.
