A birdcatcher lived in a small cottage at the edge of the woods. Every day he set his nets in the trees and caught wild birds, which he sold at the market. He did not have much money, but he had two birds that he had kept for years. One was a partridge with pretty spotted feathers. The other was a young rooster with a bright red comb on his head.
One evening, the birdcatcher was sitting down to a simple supper of boiled vegetables when somebody knocked at the door. It was an old friend whom he had not seen for many years. "I was passing through, so I thought I would visit you," said the friend. "I hope you have something to eat, because I have been walking all day and I am very hungry."
The birdcatcher's face fell. He was happy to see his friend, but his nets had been empty all week, and there was nothing in the house except vegetables. "I cannot give my friend boiled carrots," he thought. "What kind of host would I be?"
He looked at the partridge in her cage. "I am sorry, my dear," he said, and he reached in to take her out.
The partridge screamed. "Master, wait, and think about what you are doing! When you put out your nets, it is my singing that brings the other partridges to you. Without me, your nets will be empty forever, and nobody will sing you to sleep at night. Will you really eat your best worker?"
The birdcatcher stopped, because it was true. The partridge was very useful. He put her back in her cage and closed the door. Then he turned to the rooster.
The rooster had been listening carefully, and he was ready. "Master, please!" he cried. "If you eat me, who will wake you up in the morning? I have never missed a single sunrise. Without me, you will sleep until noon, and you will miss the best time for checking your nets. You need me more than you need anything in this house!"
The birdcatcher scratched his head, because the rooster was right too. He had a very good voice, and he was never late. The birdcatcher looked at the partridge, and then at the rooster. Then he looked at his hungry friend, who was sitting at the table and politely pretending not to listen.
"You both make excellent points," he said at last. "You," he said to the partridge, "are the best singer in the woods. And you," he said to the rooster, "are better than any clock. Everything that you have said is completely true."
The two birds smiled with relief.
"But," the birdcatcher went on, "my friend is hungry, and so am I. A man cannot eat good arguments for dinner."
The rooster's smile disappeared. An hour later, the two old friends were sitting by the fire, enjoying a hot, delicious meal. The birdcatcher felt a little sorry, of course. And the next morning, when he woke up very late and the sun was already high in the sky, he sighed. "Well," he said, "the rooster was right about one thing."
