Long ago, in the Heian period, a woman was traveling along the coast of Echigo with her two children and a maid. The girl, Anju, was fourteen, and her brother, Zushio, was twelve. Their father had been sent away to Tsukushi, in faraway Kyushu, because of a mistake he had made in his work for the government. The family had heard nothing from him for years, and now they were going to look for him.
In those days, there were men who stole people and sold them as servants. Because of this, the law said that no one could let strangers stay in their house. When evening came, the family could find nowhere to sleep. They lay down under a bridge.
A man came by and spoke to them kindly. His name was Yamaoka Dayu. "It is dangerous to sleep here," he said. "Come to my house. And if you are going to Tsukushi, it is much easier to go by boat than over the mountains. I will help you." The mother thanked him again and again.
The next morning, Yamaoka Dayu took them to the beach and put them all in his small boat. Out at sea, two other boats were waiting. Suddenly, he put the mother and the maid into one boat, and the two children into the other. He had sold them. "Where are you taking us?" the mother cried. The boats began to move apart.
The maid jumped into the sea and was never seen again. The mother stood up in the boat and shouted across the water, "Anju! Keep the little statue of Jizo safe! Zushio! Keep your father's sword safe! Never be separated!" Jizo is a Buddhist guardian who protects children. The small golden Jizo was the family's most precious treasure. The children cried out for their mother until her boat disappeared.
The mother was sold to the island of Sado. The children were sold to a rich and cruel man in Tango, called Sansho Dayu, or Sansho the Steward. He had hundreds of servants. Every day, Anju was sent to the beach to carry heavy buckets of seawater for making salt. Zushio was sent to the mountains to cut firewood. If they did not bring back enough, they were given no food.
On the first day, Zushio did not know how to cut wood, and his hands bled. A kind woodcutter helped him. On the beach, Anju dropped her buckets in the waves, and a girl named Kohagi showed her how to carry them. Every night, brother and sister sat together and talked about their mother and father.
One night, they talked about running away. Sansho's cruel son Saburo heard them. That night, both children had the same terrible dream. In the dream, Saburo pressed a burning hot iron onto their foreheads. But when they woke up, there were no marks on their foreheads. Instead, when they looked at the little Jizo, there was a mark on its forehead. Jizo had taken their pain.
After that, Anju changed. She became quiet and thoughtful, as if she had decided something deep in her heart. One day she asked Sansho, "Please let me go to the mountains with my brother." Sansho laughed and said she could, if she cut her long hair short like a boy. Without a word, Anju let them cut off her beautiful hair.
In the mountains, Anju took her brother's hands. "Zushio, listen to me. You must run away today. Go to the temple at the foot of the mountain and ask the monks to hide you. Then go to Kyoto. Find our father, and then come back for Mother." She gave him the golden Jizo. "Take this with you. It will protect you."
"But what about you?" said Zushio. "Don't worry about me," said Anju with a smile. "I will stay here and make sure they do not follow you. Go now, quickly!" Zushio ran down the mountain, crying. Anju watched him until he was gone.
That evening, Anju did not come back to Sansho's house. People searched for her, and at last they found her small straw sandals at the edge of a deep pond. Anju had gone into the water and never came back. She had given everything so that her brother could be free.
At the temple, a kind monk named Donmyo hid Zushio in a large basket. When Sansho's men came, the monk sent them away. Later, Donmyo shaved Zushio's head to make him look like a young monk and took him safely to Kyoto.
In Kyoto, Zushio slept in Kiyomizu Temple. One morning, a great noble named Fujiwara no Morozane came to the temple. His daughter was very sick, and he had dreamed that a boy with a special Jizo would help her. When he saw Zushio's golden Jizo, he was amazed. He took Zushio home, and soon his daughter became well. Morozane learned that Zushio's father was a man he had known. Sadly, he also learned that the father had already died in Tsukushi.
Morozane treated Zushio like his own son and helped him to study. When Zushio became a young man, he was made the governor of Tango, the very place where he and Anju had suffered. His first act was to make a new law: no one could buy or sell people anymore. Sansho was forced to free all his servants and pay them for their work. Strangely, his farm and his business did even better than before.
Then Zushio crossed the sea to Sado to look for his mother. He searched for days. At last, as he was walking past a farm, he heard a woman singing in a weak voice. She was sitting by a field of millet, chasing away the birds with a long stick. Her hair was messy and gray, and her eyes were blind. She sang the same song again and again.
"I miss you, Anju, fly away, birds. I miss you, Zushio, fly away, birds."
Zushio fell to his knees in front of her. He could not speak. He took out the golden Jizo and pressed it gently against her forehead. Then, like water flowing into a dry field, her eyes slowly opened, and she could see again.
"Zushio!" she cried. Mother and son held each other tightly and wept, there in the quiet field by the sea.
