Long ago, there was a very poor young man. He had no family, no money, and no work. One day, he went to a temple of Kannon, a Buddhist figure of mercy. "Please help me," he prayed. "I don't know what to do."
That night, he had a dream. Kannon said to him, "When you leave the temple, keep the first thing you touch. Take good care of it and walk west."
In the morning, he walked out of the temple gate. Then he tripped over a stone and fell down. When he got up, there was something in his hand. It was a warashibe, a single piece of straw.
"Just a piece of straw?" he thought. But he remembered the dream, so he kept it. He started to walk west.
Soon a horsefly began to fly around his head. Buzz, buzz! He caught it and tied it to the end of the straw. Now the fly was flying around the straw like a little toy.
Just then, a fine carriage came along the road. A little boy inside was crying. When the boy saw the flying bug, he stopped crying. "I want that!" he said. The young man gave him the straw. The boy's mother thanked him and gave him three oranges.
He walked on. On the road, a woman was sitting under a tree. She was very thirsty, and she could not walk anymore. "Here, please eat these," he said, and he gave her the oranges. The juicy oranges helped her feel better. To thank him, she gave him a roll of beautiful silk cloth.
He walked on. Then he met a samurai with a horse. The horse was lying on the ground because it was sick. "I must hurry to the capital," said the samurai. "I can't wait for this horse. Will you give me that cloth for it?" So the young man traded the silk for the sick horse.
He stayed with the horse all night. He gave it water and gently washed its body. In the morning, the horse stood up. It was healthy and strong again!
He rode the horse to a village. There, a rich man was getting ready for a long trip. "What a wonderful horse!" said the rich man. "Please let me use it. You can live in my house and take care of my rice fields while I am away."
The young man worked hard in the fields, and the rice grew very well. The rich man was so happy when he came back that he asked him to marry his daughter.
So the poor young man became a choja, a very rich man. And people called him the Straw Millionaire, because it all started with one piece of straw.
