I am lying down next to an old pond, and many frogs live in it.
Reeds grow thick all around the pond. Behind them, a row of tall poplar trees moves gently in the wind. Behind the trees is the quiet summer sky, where small clouds always shine like pieces of glass. All of this is reflected in the water of the pond, much more beautiful than the real thing.
All day long, the frogs in the pond sing, "Kororo, karara." If you listen for a moment, it sounds like only "kororo, karara." But really, they are having a serious debate. The days of Aesop were not the only time when frogs could talk.
One frog was sitting on a reed leaf. Like a university professor, he spoke to the others. "What is water for? It is for us frogs to swim in. What are insects for? They are for us frogs to eat."
"Hear, hear!" shouted all the frogs in the pond. There were so many frogs that they almost covered the water, so their voices were very loud. At that moment, a snake was sleeping under a poplar tree. The noise woke it up. It lifted its head, looked toward the pond and licked its lips sleepily.
"What is the earth for?" the frog went on. "It is for plants to grow in. And what are plants for? They are for giving us frogs shade. So the whole earth is for us frogs, isn't it?" "Hear, hear!"
When the snake heard the second "Hear, hear," its body became as straight as a whip. Then it slowly moved into the reeds. With its black eyes shining, it watched the pond carefully.
The frog on the reed leaf was still talking, with his big mouth open. "What is the sky for? It is for hanging the sun in. What is the sun for? It is for drying our backs. So the whole sky is for us frogs! Water, plants, insects, earth, sky and sun are all for us. Everything in the world is for us. There is no doubt about it. I want to thank God from my heart for making the whole universe for us. Praise the name of God!"
The frog looked up at the sky, rolled one eye, and opened his big mouth again. "Praise the name of God..." Before he could finish, the snake's head shot out. In a moment, the great speaker was in the snake's mouth.
"Karara, oh no!" "Kororo, oh no!" "Oh no, karara, kororo!" While all the frogs were shouting, the snake went into the reeds with the frog in its mouth. The pond had probably never heard such a noise since the beginning of time.
In all the noise, I heard a young frog crying. "Water, plants, insects, earth, sky and sun are all for us. Then what about the snake? Is the snake for us too?"
"Yes," another frog answered. "The snake is for us frogs too. If snakes don't eat us, there will be more and more frogs. Then the pond, I mean the world, will become too small. That is why the snake comes to eat us. Think of the eaten frog as a sacrifice for the happiness of the many. Yes, the snake is for us too. Everything in the world is for us frogs. Praise the name of God!"
This is the answer I heard from a frog that seemed to be old.
