High up in the sky, there is a river of stars. In Japan, it is called Amanogawa, the River of Heaven. In English, we call it the Milky Way.
Long ago, the King of the Sky lived by this river. He had a daughter named Orihime. Ori means weaving, and hime means princess. Orihime wove beautiful cloth for the gods. Her cloth had all the colors of the sky, from morning pink to night blue.
Orihime worked very hard every day. She had no time to play and no time to fall in love. Her father began to worry. "My daughter is always working. She looks lonely," he thought.
On the other side of the river, there lived a young man named Hikoboshi. He took care of the cows of heaven. He was kind and hard-working, too. So the King of the Sky introduced them to each other.
Orihime and Hikoboshi fell in love at first sight. They got married and were very happy. But they were so happy that they forgot about their work. Orihime stopped weaving, so the gods' clothes became old and full of holes. Hikoboshi stopped taking care of his cows, so the cows walked all over heaven and got sick.
The King of the Sky became very angry. "You must go back to your own sides of the river," he said. He sent Hikoboshi far away across the River of Heaven. The river was wide and deep, and they could not see each other.
Orihime cried and cried. She could not weave because her tears fell on the cloth. Her father felt sorry for her. "If you both work hard, you may meet once a year," he said. "On the seventh night of the seventh month, you can cross the river."
So Orihime went back to her loom, and Hikoboshi went back to his cows. They worked hard all year, waiting for that one special night.
When the night finally came, Orihime went to the river. But there was no bridge. She began to cry again. Then a big group of magpies flew down from the sky. Magpies are black and white birds. They opened their wings and made a bridge across the river. Orihime ran across, and Hikoboshi was waiting for her.
People say that if it rains on that night, the river becomes too high to cross. So on Tanabata, the seventh of July, people in Japan hope for a clear sky.
They also write their wishes on tanzaku, long strips of colorful paper, and hang them on bamboo trees. Look up on a clear summer night. You may see two bright stars, one on each side of the Milky Way. They are Orihime and Hikoboshi, still waiting for their night together.
