Long ago, a young woodcutter lived at the foot of Mount Katsuragi in Yamato. His face was gentle, and his hair was long like a woman's. So people called him Kaminagahiko, which means "the long-haired young man."
The music of his flute was so beautiful that even the grass, the trees, and the animals listened.
One day, while he was playing, a giant with only one leg appeared. "I love your music. What would you like?" "Please give me a dog." The giant laughed. "You don't want much! I am the One-Legged God." He whistled, and a white dog came running. "His name is Sniff. He can find anything, however far away."
The next day, a giant with only one arm gave him a black dog. "His name is Fly. He can carry you through the sky." The day after that, a giant with only one eye gave him a spotted dog. "His name is Bite. He can kill any monster. These dogs will come back to you when you play your flute. Without it, they will not come."
A few days later, at a place where three roads met, he met two young samurai on horses. "The two daughters of the minister of Asuka have disappeared," they said. "There is a big reward for finding them." Then they looked down on him and rode away.
"Sniff! Find the princesses!" The white dog smelled the wind. "The older one is in a cave on Mount Ikoma. A monster has caught her." Taking the other dogs under his arms, he got on the black dog. "Fly to Mount Ikoma!" The black dog rose into the sky like a leaf.
In the cave, a princess with a gold comb was crying. "The monster is sleeping inside," she whispered. He only smiled. "Bite! Go!" The spotted dog ran into the cave with a roar like thunder, and soon the monster was dead.
"Where is my sister?" the princess asked. "On Mount Kasagi," said Sniff. "The Earth Spider has caught her." The Earth Spider, a clever, evil little man, smiled and invited them in. But when they found the younger princess inside, he closed the cave with a huge rock. "Ha ha! You will die of hunger!"
Then Kaminagahiko played his flute. The Earth Spider loved the music so much that he slowly moved the rock to listen. When the opening was big enough, he shouted, "Bite!" The spotted dog jumped out and killed the spider.
On the way home, the princesses quietly put their gold and silver combs in his long hair. He did not notice. When he saw the two samurai again, he flew down to tell them everything.
The samurai were very jealous. They praised him and learned all about the dogs and the flute. Then they stole his flute, jumped on the black dog with the princesses and the other dogs, and flew away. Kaminagahiko cried and cried.
Then gentle voices came in the wind. They were two mountain spirits. "We are Princess Koma of Mount Ikoma and Princess Kasa of Mount Kasagi. You saved us from the monsters. We will get your flute back." Soon his flute fell from the sky, with gold armor and a silver helmet.
He played his flute, and his dogs came back. Dressed like a great general, he flew down to the minister's house. "I saved the princesses, not these samurai," he said. "He is lying!" cried the samurai. "We saved them!"
The minister asked his daughters. "Kaminagahiko saved us," they said. "Look at our combs in his hair." And there they were, shining in his long hair. The samurai fell to the ground. "We lied. Please don't kill us!"
Kaminagahiko got a big reward and married one of the princesses. The three dogs chased the samurai away. But which princess became his wife? Nobody knows. It was too long ago.
