This is the dream I had.
I heard that Unkei was carving the Nio at the great gate of Gokokuji Temple, so I went to see him. Unkei was a famous sculptor who lived about seven hundred years ago, in the Kamakura period. The Nio are the two strong guardian kings who stand at the gates of Buddhist temples with angry faces, to keep evil away.
When I arrived, there was already a crowd of people in front of the gate. They were all talking and giving their opinions. Above them, a great old pine tree spread its branches across the blue sky. Its green leaves and the red gate looked beautiful together, as if they belonged to an old painting.
But the people who were watching were all people of the Meiji era, just like me. Most of them were rickshaw men, who pulled passengers in light two-wheeled carts. They seemed to be waiting for customers and had nothing better to do.
"It's so big," one of them said. "It must be harder than carving a person." "Nio are strong," another said. "I've heard that in the old days, the Nio were stronger than any hero."
Unkei did not care at all about the people below. He was standing high up on a wooden frame, carving the Nio's face. He wore a small black cap on his head and a kind of old robe with big sleeves tied up on his back. He looked very old-fashioned. I wondered, "Why is Unkei still alive in the Meiji era?" But it seemed strange to nobody, so I just kept watching.
Unkei was hitting a chisel with a wooden hammer. He carved the thick eyebrows, then the angry nose. He worked very quickly, and he never seemed to stop and think. Yet every cut was perfect. With each stroke, the shape of a face appeared from the wood.
"How can he carve so freely without thinking?" I said to myself. "How can he be sure that he will make the face he wants?"
A young man next to me heard me. "He isn't really making the eyebrows and the nose," he said. "The Nio is already buried inside the wood. He is only digging it out with his hammer and chisel. It is just like digging a stone out of the earth. So he can't make a mistake."
I was very surprised. "If that's true, then anyone can do it," I thought. I suddenly wanted to try it myself, so I went straight home.
Behind my house, there was a pile of oak wood. A storm had blown down some trees not long before, and the wood had been cut into pieces for the fire. I took my tools and chose the biggest piece. I began to carve it with all my strength. But I could not find a Nio inside.
"Maybe there is no Nio in this one," I thought. I tried the next piece. There was no Nio there, either. I tried a third piece and a fourth. I tried every piece of wood in the pile, one after another. But not a single piece had a Nio hidden inside it.
At last, I understood. There are no Nio buried in the wood of the Meiji era. And that is why Unkei is still alive today.
