The last chapter of James Allen's As a Man Thinketh is the shortest. It is about one of the most beautiful things a person can have: a calm mind. Allen called calmness of mind one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom.
Calmness, he said, does not come by chance. It is the result of long and patient effort in self-control. When we see a truly calm person, we are seeing someone who has practiced for many years.
Why do people become calmer as they grow in understanding? Allen's answer connects to the whole book. When we understand that our own lives are shaped by our thoughts, we also begin to understand that other people's lives are shaped by their thoughts. We start to see the causes behind what people say and do. Then we stop fussing, worrying and getting angry about everything. We stay steady and peaceful.
Imagine a classmate says something rude to you. A mind without calm explodes: "How dare he!" Your heart beats fast, and you think about it all day. A calm mind asks a different question: "Why did he say that? Maybe he is tired, or worried about something." You do not have to agree with him. But you do not let his words control your whole day.
Allen pointed out that calm people are a blessing to others. Because they have learned to control themselves, they know how to get along with others. People respect their quiet strength and feel they can depend on them. The calmer a person becomes, the greater his success, his influence and his power to do good.
This is true even in business. Allen said that even an ordinary shopkeeper will find his business growing as he becomes calmer and more self-controlled, because people always prefer to deal with someone who is steady and even-tempered.
He described the calm person beautifully. Such a person is like a tree that gives shade in a hot, dry land, or like a rock that gives shelter in a storm. Everyone loves a peaceful heart and a sweet-tempered, balanced life. Whether it rains or shines, such people stay sweet and calm. Allen said this kind of calm is more precious than gold.
Sadly, he noticed, many people ruin their lives with sudden anger. They destroy what is sweet and beautiful in one moment of temper. Very few people are truly balanced.
The book ends with a picture of the sea. Life is like an ocean full of storms. But Allen tells his readers to keep their hand firmly on the wheel of thought. Inside the boat of your soul, he says, the master is only sleeping. Wake him. Self-control is strength. Right thought is mastery. Calmness is power. Then he gives one last piece of advice: say to your heart, "Peace, be still."
Try this today. The next time you feel angry or worried, stop and take three slow breaths before you speak. Quietly say to yourself, "Peace, be still." Then ask, "What might be the cause of this?" Three breaths is a small thing. But each time you do it, you are polishing one of the most beautiful jewels a person can own.
