In 1910, an American writer named Wallace D. Wattles published a small book called The Science of Getting Rich. Wattles died only one year later, but his book did not die. It is still read today, and in Japan it is known by a title that means "The Scientific Law of Attracting Wealth." Many later books about the "law of attraction" grew from its ideas.
Wattles began with a question. Why do some people become rich while others stay poor? He looked at the usual answers one by one.
Is it the place where you live? Wattles said no. In every town, rich and poor people live side by side. Is it talent? No. Many talented people stay poor, and many people with ordinary talent become rich. Is it saving money? No again. Wattles noticed that some people who save every coin are still poor, while some people who spend freely become rich. Is it the kind of business? No. Two people can run the same kind of shop on the same street, and one may succeed while the other fails.
So what is the answer? Wattles believed that people become rich because they do things in what he called a "Certain Way." He wrote that this way works like a law of nature, and he compared it to arithmetic. If you follow it, he said, you will get rich with mathematical certainty.
Before explaining this way, Wattles wanted to make one point clear. He believed that there is nothing wrong with wanting to be rich. To him, the desire for money was really a desire for a fuller life. People need good food, a warm home, and rest for the body. They need books, time to study, and travel for the mind. And they need to be able to give to the people they love. Without enough money, Wattles said, it is hard to live fully in body, mind, and soul.
Then what is the Certain Way? It begins with thinking. First, you must form a clear picture in your mind of what you want. Not "I want more money," but a detailed picture: the home, the work, the life you want. Second, you must hold that picture with faith, believing that it is coming to you. Third, you must be deeply grateful, every day, for the good things you already have and for the good things that are coming.
But Wattles did not say that thinking alone is enough. He said clearly that thought must be joined with action. You must also do your present work very well, every day. This part of his teaching is often forgotten by people who talk about the law of attraction today.
How should a modern reader understand this book? We should be careful. Wattles called his ideas an "exact science," but they are not science in the way we use the word today. They have never been tested like laws of physics. And in the real world, things like where you were born, your health, and plain luck also matter. Some people work very hard and still struggle.
Even so, parts of his advice are very practical. A clear goal helps us choose what to do next. Being thankful helps us stay positive. And doing today's work well is useful for anyone, rich or poor. These ideas can help us, even if we do not believe that the book can promise riches.
