Long ago, a young man named Leo played the trumpet in an army. He did not carry a sword or a spear. He only carried his shining brass trumpet. When the army marched into battle, Leo walked in front of the soldiers and played loud, exciting music.
When the soldiers heard his trumpet, their hearts became full of courage. "Forward!" they shouted, and they ran into battle. Leo's music was famous in the whole army.
But one day, during a big battle, something went wrong. Leo was playing his trumpet in front of the soldiers when the enemy attacked from the side. In the confusion, Leo could not find his army. Three enemy soldiers caught him and took him back to their camp. They tied his hands and put him in a tent.
"What are we going to do with him?" said one enemy soldier.
"He is a prisoner," said another. "We should kill him."
Leo was very frightened. "Please, wait!" he cried. "Please spare my life! I did not do anything wrong. I did not kill a single one of your men. Look at me! I don't have a sword. I don't have a spear. I don't have any weapons at all. I only have this trumpet!" He held up his trumpet. "I only play music. Music can't hurt anyone!"
The three soldiers looked at each other. Then the oldest one shook his head.
"That is exactly the reason we can't let you go," he said.
"What? Why?" asked Leo.
"You say that you do not fight," said the old soldier. "And it is true. You do not hold a sword. But when you play that trumpet, your soldiers become brave. They run at us without fear. Your music makes a hundred men fight. Maybe you never hurt anyone with your own hands. But because of your trumpet, many of our friends are hurt today. You are more dangerous than ten soldiers with swords."
Leo did not know what to say. He looked down at his trumpet. For the first time, he understood that his music was not just music.
The soldiers kept Leo as a prisoner for a long time. But when the war ended, they let him go home. Leo never went back to the army again. Instead, he played his trumpet at weddings and festivals. And there, his music only made people dance.
