This is a certain town in Shanghai, China. In one house, the second floor was dark even in the daytime. There, an old Indian woman with an evil face was talking with an American merchant.
"Please tell my fortune again," said the American, and he threw a check for three hundred dollars in front of the old woman.
When she saw the check, she suddenly became friendly. "I want to know when there will be a war between Japan and America," the American said slyly. "Then we merchants can make a lot of money." "Come back tomorrow," she said proudly. "In fifty years, my fortunes have never been wrong. The god Agni himself tells them to me."
When the American left, the old woman called, "Eren!" A beautiful Chinese girl came out of the next room. Her cheeks were as pale as wax. "Tonight at twelve, I will call the god Agni. If you give me trouble again, I will kill you."
Then she noticed that the girl was looking out of the window. "What are you looking at?" she shouted, and she raised a broom. Just at that moment, someone began to knock loudly at the door.
At about the same time, a young Japanese man had seen the girl's face at the window. An old rickshaw man told him, "An old Indian woman lives there. People say she uses magic. Don't go near her."
The young man walked into the house. When he heard a girl crying, he ran up the dark stairs and beat on the door. When it opened, only the old woman was there. The girl was gone.
"My master is the Japanese consul in Hong Kong," said the young man. "Last spring, his daughter Taeko disappeared. I am Endo, a student in his house. Where is she?" He took out a pistol. "The police think an Indian took her."
But the old woman only laughed. "I have never seen such a girl." "Liar! The girl at the window was Taeko!" When Endo tried to go into the next room, she stood in front of the door. Endo raised his pistol, but she gave a cry like a crow, and the pistol fell from his hand.
"Witch!" Endo jumped at her like a tiger. But she swept dust from the floor into his face with her broom. The dust turned into sparks and burned his face, and Endo ran out of the house.
Near midnight, as Endo stood in the street, a piece of paper came falling from the window. He read it by the light of his flashlight. It was a letter from Taeko, written faintly in pencil.
"Mr. Endo, the old woman is a terrible witch. She makes an Indian god called Agni come into my body, and Agni tells the future through my mouth. Tonight, I will only pretend to fall under her magic. Then I will say that if she does not send me back to my father, Agni will take her life. She fears Agni more than anything. Please come again tomorrow morning."
It was five minutes before twelve. Suddenly the window went dark, and a strange smell of incense came floating down into the street.
In the dark room, the old woman read magic words from a book. In front of her, Taeko sat in a chair, her hands shaking. The old woman moved around her, waving her hands. In the pale light of the incense fire, she looked like a giant bat.
Soon Taeko began to feel sleepy, as always. "Gods of Japan," she prayed, "please don't let me fall asleep. If I can see my father's face once more, I don't care if I die." But she heard faint music like a gong, the sound that always came with Agni. Soon she was fast asleep.
But Endo was watching through the keyhole. He could not wait until morning, so he had crept into the house. He could see only Taeko's pale face, but he could hear the old woman clearly. "Agni, Agni, please hear my words."
Then Taeko, with her eyes still closed, began to speak. But it was not a girl's voice. It was the rough voice of a man. "No, I will not hear you. Tonight I will leave you and punish you. You stole this girl from her poor father. If you love your life, send her back tonight."
The old woman gave an ugly laugh and held a knife in front of Taeko's face. "Don't make a fool of me! You are copying the voice of the god!" Endo did not know that Taeko was really asleep. "The plan has been discovered!" he thought. But Taeko did not move. "Your time to die is near," she answered. "My voice is the voice of the fire that burns in heaven."
The old woman grabbed Taeko by the hair and raised her knife. Endo tried to break the locked door, but it would not open. Suddenly he heard a scream and the sound of someone falling. Endo threw himself against the door again and again. At last, it broke open.
Taeko was sitting in the chair, as still as a dead person. But to Endo, she looked holy, as if a light were shining around her head. "Miss Taeko! It's me, Endo!" Taeko slowly opened her eyes. "I'm sorry, Mr. Endo. The plan failed. I fell asleep." "No, you did just as you promised. Now let's run!" "But the old woman is here, isn't she?"
Endo looked around the room. Under the table lay the old woman, dead, with her own knife in her chest. "Did you kill her, Mr. Endo?" Taeko asked. At that moment, Endo finally understood the strange power of fate. The plan had failed, but because of that, the old woman was dead and Taeko was safe.
"I did not kill her," Endo whispered seriously, holding Taeko. "It was the god Agni, who came here tonight."
