One day, a man caught a big golden eagle in the mountains. He was very pleased. "What a fine bird!" he said. "But I don't want him to fly away." So he took out a big pair of scissors and cut the eagle's long wing feathers. Then he put the eagle in his farmyard with the chickens and ducks.
The eagle was very sad. He had always flown high above the mountains and the clouds. Now he could not fly at all. He had to walk around the muddy farmyard with the chickens. They laughed at him. "Look at the great eagle," they said. "He can't fly any better than us!" The eagle hung his head and did not eat.
A few weeks later, a kind old man came to the farm. He saw the sad eagle in the farmyard. "That poor bird," he said. "He does not belong here. How much do you want for him?" He paid the farmer, and he took the eagle home.
The old man did not cut the eagle's feathers. He gave him good food and a quiet place to rest. Slowly, over many months, the cut feathers fell out, and new feathers grew in their place. One morning, the eagle opened his wings, and they were long and strong once more.
The old man opened the door. "Go," he said with a smile. "You are free."
The eagle flew up into the sky. He was so happy! He flew higher and higher, over the hills and over the river. Then he looked down and saw a rabbit running in a field. He dived down and caught it. "I will take this to the kind old man," he thought. "It will be my gift to thank him."
He was flying back toward the old man's house when a fox called to him from a rock below. "Hey, eagle! Where are you going with that rabbit?"
"I am taking it to the kind old man," said the eagle proudly. "He saved me. He let my feathers grow again. I want to thank him."
The fox laughed. "That is a mistake," he said. "The kind old man is already your friend. He will never hurt you. You should give your gift to the first man. He cut your wings."
"What? Why should I give a gift to him?" asked the eagle.
"Because he is the one who is dangerous to you," said the fox. "If he catches you again, he will cut your wings again. So make him happy. Make him your friend. Then he will leave you alone."
The eagle flew in circles for a long time, thinking. In the end, he took the rabbit to the kind old man, because his heart told him to. But he did not forget the fox's words about the first man. "That man is dangerous to me," he thought. "I will never go near his farm again." And from that day, he always flew high above it.
