Every morning, a fortune teller sat in the middle of the busy market square. He wore a long purple robe and a tall hat with stars on it. In front of him, there was a small table with a crystal ball on it. "Come here!" he called out to everyone. "I can see your future! Only two coins!"
Many people came to him. A young woman sat down first. The fortune teller looked into his crystal ball. "I see a tall, handsome man," he said. "You are going to marry him next year." The woman was so happy that she gave him three coins.
Then an old farmer sat down. "I see rain," said the fortune teller, looking deep into the ball. "Your fields will be green, and you will have lots of wheat this summer." The farmer smiled and paid him.
"I know everything," the fortune teller said loudly to the crowd. "The past, the present, the future! Nothing is hidden from my eyes!"
At that moment, a boy came running into the market. He was out of breath. "Sir! Sir!" he shouted. "Come home quickly! Thieves broke into your house! They opened all the doors, and they are taking everything!"
The fortune teller jumped up. His face went white. "My house? My money? My things?" He knocked over his little table. The crystal ball fell on the ground and rolled away. He did not stop to pick it up. He held up his long purple robe with both hands, and he ran across the market as fast as he could.
Everyone in the market watched him go. Then a man who was selling fish began to laugh. "Hey, you!" he called after the fortune teller. "You tell everyone about their future. You see everything in your crystal ball. So why didn't you see this coming? Why didn't you know about your own house?"
Now everyone was laughing. The young woman stopped smiling. "Maybe I am not going to marry a tall, handsome man after all," she said.
"And maybe it will not rain on my fields," said the old farmer.
When the fortune teller got home, the thieves were gone, and so were all his things. He sat down on his empty floor and sighed. The next morning, he went back to the market. But nobody came to his table. And that afternoon, he started a new job. He sold fish.
