Imagine a junior high school student named Riku. It is Monday morning, and he is walking to school. "I don't want to go today," he says to his friend. Many students feel like Riku sometimes. But for millions of children around the world, going to school is only a dream.
In 2025, UNESCO, a United Nations group for education, shared a surprising number. About 272 million children and young people around the world were not going to school. That is more than twice the number of people in Japan. About 78 million of them were children of elementary school age.
Why can't they go to school? The biggest reason is poverty. Some families cannot pay for uniforms, books, or pens. Some children have to work to help their families. They carry water, sell things on the street, or take care of their little brothers and sisters all day.
In some places, the nearest school is very far away. Children have to walk for two or three hours on dangerous roads. In other places, there is fighting, and schools are closed or broken. Families who run away from war often cannot find a school in their new town.
Girls sometimes have an even harder time. In some communities, people believe that girls do not need to study. Some girls have to stay home and do housework. Others get married when they are still very young, and they stop going to school.
Why is school so important? At school, children learn to read, write, and do math. With these skills, they can get better jobs in the future and help their families. School is also a safe place. Children can make friends there, and in some schools, they can get a free lunch.
Many people are working on this problem. The United Nations has a goal: every child should be able to finish elementary and secondary school by 2030. Some groups build new schools in villages. Others give free school lunches, so parents are happy to send their children to school. When children cannot go to a school building, some of them study with lessons on the radio.
This problem is not only in faraway countries. Japan has night junior high schools. People who could not finish school when they were young can study there in the evening. Some of the students are much older than their teachers, and some came to Japan from other countries. They show us that it is never too late to learn.
Is the world doing enough? Some people think rich countries should give more money for schools in poor countries. Others think money is not enough. They say that each country must also change its own ideas, for example, the idea that girls do not need to study.
What do you think? Some people say rich countries should help children in poor countries go to school, because education can change their lives. Others say each country should solve the problem by itself, because the people there know best what their children need.
