Imagine walking around a school festival. At one stand, students are selling cookies made with cricket powder. Some visitors hurry past, but a boy named Riku decides to try one. "It tastes a little like nuts," he says in surprise. All over the world, more and more people are asking a serious question: could insects become an important part of our food in the future?
This question began to attract wide attention in 2013, when the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, or FAO, published a long report on edible insects. According to the report, insects are part of the traditional diet of at least two billion people. More than 1,900 kinds of insects have been eaten as food around the world. The most common are beetles, followed by caterpillars, and then bees, wasps, and ants.
Eating insects is not new in Japan, either. In some mountain areas, such as Nagano Prefecture, people have long cooked grasshoppers called inago in soy sauce and sugar. In the past, these grasshoppers were often caught in rice fields in autumn. The young of bees and wasps have also been eaten as a special local food. For many older people, these dishes are a taste of home, not something strange.
So why are experts interested in insects now? One reason is the growing world population. As the number of people increases and more people eat meat, the world needs more protein. However, raising cows, pigs, and chickens uses a lot of land, water, and feed. Insects may offer a way to produce protein while using fewer resources.
Insects are very good at turning feed into food. The FAO report explains that crickets need only about two kilograms of feed to gain one kilogram of body weight. Also, people can eat most of a cricket's body, while a large part of a cow cannot be eaten. When this is considered, crickets are about twelve times more efficient than cattle at turning feed into meat. One reason is that insects are cold-blooded, so they do not use energy to keep their bodies warm.
Insects may be better for the environment in other ways, too. The report says that insects such as crickets and mealworms produce much less greenhouse gas than cattle or pigs, and they need far less land and water. Some kinds of insects can even be raised on food waste, so they could help to reduce garbage at the same time. Many insects are also nutritious, because they are rich in protein and contain good fats and minerals such as iron.
In recent years, insect food has started to appear in Western countries as well. Since 2021, the European Union has approved several insects as food, including mealworms and house crickets. These insects are often dried and ground into powder, so that they can be added to bread, pasta, and snacks without being seen. In Japan, too, some companies have started selling cricket snacks and crackers.
However, there are still some big problems. The first is often called the "yuck factor." Many people feel uncomfortable just looking at insects, so they do not want to eat them, even when they are told that insects are healthy. Changing feelings like this can take a very long time.
Safety is another concern. People who are allergic to shrimp or crab may also react to some insects, because their bodies contain similar proteins. Insects must be raised, cooked, and stored carefully, just like any other food. In addition, insect farming is still a young industry, and it is not yet clear whether it can produce large amounts of food at a low price.
Some scientists also say that we should not expect too much. The FAO report itself warned that many of the numbers about greenhouse gases came from small experiments in laboratories. Large insect farms may need energy to keep the insects warm, and the benefits also depend on what the insects are fed. Insects may help, but they will not solve the world's food problems alone.
What do you think? Some people say that we should start eating insects, because they can give us protein while using much less land, water, and feed. Others say that insects will never become a popular food, because many people dislike them and there are still questions about safety and cost.
