Hans worked for his master for seven years. Then he said, "Master, my time is over. I want to go home to my mother. Please give me my pay." "You were a good and honest worker," said his master, and he gave Hans a piece of gold as big as Hans's head. Hans put it on his shoulder and started for home.
The gold was very heavy. Soon a man came along on a fine horse. "Riding is wonderful!" said Hans. "It's like sitting on a chair, and you never hurt your feet."
"Then let's trade," said the rider. "My horse for your gold." Hans was very happy. He climbed on the horse and rode off.
But the horse ran too fast, and Hans fell off into a ditch. A farmer with a cow stopped the horse. "Riding is no fun," said Hans.
"A cow is better. You can walk behind it slowly and have milk, butter and cheese every day." "I'll trade my cow for your horse," said the farmer. Hans thanked him again and again.
The day was hot, and Hans was thirsty. He tried to milk the cow, but not a drop came out. Then the cow kicked him on the head. A butcher came by with a young pig.
"That cow is too old to give milk," he said. "Then I'd rather have a pig," said Hans. "Think of the sausages!" So they traded.
Next, Hans met a boy with a fine white goose. "That pig looks like the one that was stolen from the mayor's farm," said the boy. "If they catch you with it, you'll go to prison!" Hans was afraid. "Please take the pig and give me your goose." The boy took the pig and quickly went away.
"What luck!" thought Hans. "Roast goose, and soft feathers for my pillow!" In the next village he met a knife grinder who was singing happily at his work.
"A grinder always has money in his pocket," said the man. "If you had a grindstone, you could always make money too. I'll give you this stone for your goose." So Hans gave him the goose and took the heavy stone.
Hans walked on, but the stone was very heavy, and he was tired and thirsty. He came to a well. He put the stone on the edge and bent down to drink. Then he pushed the stone by accident, and plop! It fell into the deep water.
Hans jumped up with joy. Tears of happiness came to his eyes. "Now I don't have to carry that heavy stone!" he cried. "There is no one under the sun as lucky as I am!" With a light heart and nothing in his hands, he ran all the way home to his mother.
