It was a lovely summer in the country. A mother duck was sitting on her eggs near an old farmhouse. At last the eggs began to crack, one after another. "Peep, peep!" Little yellow ducklings came out and looked around at the big green world.
But the biggest egg was still there. At last it cracked, and out came a big, gray, ugly bird. "He's so big," thought the mother.
"Is he a turkey chick? If he can swim, he's a duck." The next day he jumped into the water and swam very well. "He is my own child," she said.
But in the farmyard, the other ducks and the hens laughed at him. "Look at that ugly thing!" They bit him and pushed him. Even his brothers and sisters were unkind to him. Every day was worse than the day before. At last the duckling ran away.
He came to a wide marsh where wild ducks lived. "You're very ugly," they said, "but we don't care." Then hunters came, and there was the sound of guns everywhere. A big dog put his nose close to him but went away. "I'm so ugly that even the dog doesn't want to bite me," he thought sadly.
Autumn came. One evening he saw a group of beautiful big birds fly out of the bushes. They were white, with long, graceful necks. They were swans. They opened their wide wings and flew away to warmer countries. The duckling felt a strange love for them, but he did not know why.
The winter was very cold. The duckling had to swim around and around so the water would not freeze. One night he became so tired that he froze into the ice. In the morning a farmer found him, broke the ice and took him home. But the children wanted to play with him, and he was afraid, so he flew away into the snow. It was a long, sad winter.
At last the warm spring sun shone again. The duckling spread his wings, and they were strong. Soon he was flying over a beautiful garden.
There, on the lake, he saw three white swans. "I'll fly to them," he thought. "They may be angry because I'm so ugly, but I don't care." He landed on the water and bowed his head down.
But what did he see in the water? It was not an ugly gray bird. It was a beautiful white swan!
The other swans swam around him and touched him gently with their beaks. Children came to the lake. "Look, there's a new swan! He's the most beautiful one of all!"
He felt shy and hid his head under his wing. He was very happy, but he was not proud, because a good heart is never proud. "When I was the ugly duckling, I never dreamed of so much happiness," he thought.
