My name is Axel, and I lived in Hamburg with my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock. He was a great scientist who knew everything about rocks. He was also the most impatient man in Germany. One day in May, he ran into the house holding an old book from Iceland. "Axel! Look at this!" he shouted.
A small piece of old paper fell out of the book. It was covered with strange letters. "This was written by Arne Saknussemm," said my uncle. "He was a famous Icelandic scientist three hundred years ago. It's a secret message! Nobody will eat or sleep in this house until we read it!"
We tried for hours, but the letters made no sense. That night, I was so hot and hungry that I picked up the paper to fan myself. Suddenly I saw some Latin words on the back of it. The message had to be read backwards! I read it and my blood went cold.
The message said: "Go down into the crater of the volcano Snaefell, where the shadow of the mountain Scartaris falls before the first of July. You will reach the center of the earth. I did it. Arne Saknussemm." I tried to hide it, but my uncle found out. "We leave for Iceland at once!" he cried.
"But Uncle," I said, "everyone knows that the inside of the earth is terribly hot. We will burn to death!" He only laughed. My dear Grauben, the girl I loved, did not stop me either. "Go, Axel," she said. "When you come back, you will be a man, and we will be married."
In Iceland we hired a guide named Hans. He was tall and very quiet, and nothing ever surprised him. We climbed the volcano and looked down into the crater. There were three dark holes in the bottom. On the twenty-eighth of June, the sun came out, and the shadow of Scartaris touched the middle hole. "That's the way!" shouted my uncle.
We went down into the earth with ropes, lamps, and food. Day after day we walked through dark tunnels. Strangely, it did not get much hotter. But soon our water ran out. I was so thirsty that I fell down and could not walk. Then Hans put his ear to the rock. He heard water running behind it! He broke the rock with a pick, and a stream of hot water rushed out. We named it the Hans Stream, and it went with us on our journey.
One day I lost the others in the tunnels. I was all alone in the dark, and I cried with fear. Then, through the rock, I heard a faint voice. It was my uncle! The tunnels carried sound a long way. Following his voice, I hurried down a passage. I fell, hit my head, and woke up in my uncle's arms.
When I could walk again, my uncle led me out of the cave, and I could not believe my eyes. In front of us was a huge underground sea! Waves broke on a sandy beach. The rocky sky high above was full of strange electric light. Near the shore grew a forest of giant mushrooms, as tall as trees.
We built a raft and sailed across the sea. One day, two enormous creatures rose out of the water. They were sea monsters from millions of years ago, and they began a terrible fight right next to our raft. We watched with horror until one of them sank under the waves. Then a great storm came and threw us onto a strange shore.
On that shore we found huge bones from the ancient past. Then, among tall trees, I saw something even more amazing. A giant man, taller than any man on earth, was looking after a herd of mammoths! We ran away quietly before he saw us.
Soon after that, we found two letters carved on a rock: "A. S." "Arne Saknussemm!" cried my uncle. "We are on the right way!" But the tunnel was blocked by a huge rock. We decided to break it with explosives. We lit the fuse and ran back to our raft.
The explosion was terrible. The rock broke, but there was a great empty space behind it. The sea rushed into the hole and carried our raft down with it into the darkness. We fell and fell. Then, after hours, the raft began to go up. We were being pushed up inside a volcano by boiling water and burning rock!
We were thrown out of the top of the mountain into the bright sunlight. We had no idea where we were. A little boy told us that the mountain was Stromboli, in the warm sea near Italy. We had gone in through a volcano in cold Iceland and come out through a volcano thousands of kilometers away!
When we got home to Hamburg, my uncle became a famous man. Hans went back to Iceland, but we never forgot him. And I married my beautiful Grauben. We never reached the center of the earth. But sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can still see that great sea shining under the ground.
