"What do you want to be in the future?" Ms. Kato asked her class one Monday morning. She gave each student a small white card. Riku, a junior high school student, looked at his card for a long time. He did not know what to write.
After class, Ms. Kato read some of the cards to the students. Many of them wanted to be YouTubers or game creators. Others wanted to be doctors, nurses, or teachers. One girl wrote "pastry chef," and one boy wrote "soccer player." A few students simply wrote "office worker."
That evening, Riku asked his family the same question. His grandfather laughed. "When I was a boy, I wanted to be a train driver," he said. "In those days, station workers checked every ticket by hand. Now machines do that job."
Riku's mother wanted to be a flight attendant when she was young. "But I became a nurse, and I really love my job," she said.
Riku was surprised. Children's dream jobs change with the times. Fifty years ago, nobody wanted to be a YouTuber, because there was no YouTube. It started in 2005. Today, many people make videos and earn money from them.
New jobs are appearing all the time. Some people fly drones to check old bridges or to take pictures of farms from the sky. Some people make apps for smartphones. Others teach computers and robots how to help people. Thirty years ago, very few people did these jobs.
At the same time, some jobs are becoming less common. Machines and computers can now do many simple tasks. In many supermarkets, customers pay at machines instead of at a cashier. Some people worry that robots and AI will take away a lot of jobs. Others believe that people will find new kinds of work, just like in the past.
The next day, Ms. Kato talked to the class again. "Many of you will do jobs that do not have names yet," she said. "So it is important to keep learning new things."
Riku thought about her words. He liked drawing, and he liked computers. Maybe he could find a job that used both.
When people choose a job, what is most important to them? Some people say, "I want to do something I love." Others want a good salary or a stable job. Some people want to help others, and some want to travel around the world. There is no single right answer.
What do you think? Some people say that you should choose a job you love, because you will work hard and feel happy every day. Others say that you should choose a stable job with a good salary, because it is important to support yourself and your family.
