Once upon a time, a mouse, a bird, and a sausage lived together in one little house. They were good friends, and they were very happy. Each of them had a job.
Every day the bird flew to the forest and brought back wood. The mouse carried water, made the fire, and set the table. The sausage cooked the dinner.
But when life is too easy, people often want something new. One day the bird met another bird on the way. He told the other bird about his happy life. But the other bird said, "You are a fool! You do all the hard work. Your friends have an easy life at home."
"The mouse makes the fire and gets the water, and then she goes to her room and rests. The sausage only stays by the pot. When dinner is almost ready, it rolls through the soup once or twice. That makes everything tasty, with butter and salt. And then you come home tired, with your heavy wood."
The bird went home and thought about it. The next day he said, "I will not go to the forest anymore. I am not your servant. Let's change our jobs." The mouse and the sausage asked him not to, but the bird did not listen.
So they drew lots. The sausage had to bring the wood. The mouse had to cook. And the bird had to bring the water.
The sausage went to the forest. The bird made the fire, and the mouse waited by the pot. They waited and waited, but the sausage did not come home. So the bird flew out to look for it.
Not far away, he met a dog. The dog had found the sausage on the road and eaten it up. "You thief!" cried the bird. But the dog only said, "That sausage was carrying false letters, so I was allowed to eat it."
The bird sadly picked up the wood and flew home. He told the mouse what had happened. They were very sad, but they wanted to stay together and do their best.
The bird set the table, and the mouse cooked. She wanted to roll through the soup, just like the sausage. So she jumped into the pot. But the soup was far too hot for a little mouse, and she never came out again.
When the bird came to carry the dinner to the table, there was no cook. "Mouse! Where are you?" He threw the wood here and there, and he looked everywhere. But he could not find the mouse.
Then the wood fell into the fire and began to burn. The house was on fire! The bird flew quickly to the well to get water. But the bucket was too heavy for him. It fell into the well and pulled the bird down with it. He could not get out, and that was the end of the poor bird.
