Alice was sitting by the river with her sister on a hot summer afternoon. Her sister was reading a book with no pictures and no conversations in it. "What is the use of a book without pictures or conversations?" thought Alice. She was getting very sleepy.
Suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran past her. Then the Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, looked at it, and said, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!"
Alice jumped up. She had never seen a rabbit with a pocket or a watch before! She ran after it across the field, just in time to see it go down a large rabbit hole. In another moment, down went Alice after it.
The hole went down, and down, and down. Alice fell very slowly, past cupboards and bookshelves. At last she landed, thump, on a pile of dry leaves. She was not hurt at all.
She was in a long hall with many locked doors. On a glass table lay a tiny golden key. It opened a little door, and through it Alice saw the loveliest garden you ever saw.
But she was much too big to go through. Then she found a little bottle with a label that said "DRINK ME." She drank it, and she became smaller and smaller, until she was only ten inches high. But oh dear, she had left the key up on the table!
Next she found a little cake that said "EAT ME." She ate it, and she grew so tall that her head hit the ceiling. Poor Alice sat down and cried, and her huge tears made a great pool all around her. Then she picked up a fan that the White Rabbit had dropped, and she began to shrink again. Soon she was swimming in her own pool of tears, together with a Mouse, a Duck, a Dodo and many other strange creatures.
Later, in a wood, Alice met a large blue Caterpillar. It was sitting on top of a mushroom, smoking a long pipe. "Who are you?" asked the Caterpillar.
"I hardly know, sir," said Alice. "I have changed so many times since this morning."
The Caterpillar told her that one side of the mushroom would make her grow taller, and the other side would make her grow shorter. Alice broke off a piece from each side and kept them carefully. Now she could change her size whenever she wanted.
In a tree she saw a Cat with a very big grin. It was the Cheshire Cat. "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" asked Alice.
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat. "In that direction lives a Hatter. In that direction lives a March Hare. Visit either you like. They're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," said Alice.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat. "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
Then it slowly disappeared, starting with the end of its tail and ending with its grin. "Well!" thought Alice. "I've often seen a cat without a grin, but never a grin without a cat!"
Under a tree in front of a house, the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea. A Dormouse was sleeping between them. "No room! No room!" they cried when they saw Alice coming.
"There's plenty of room!" said Alice, and she sat down in a big armchair.
"Why is a raven like a writing desk?" asked the Hatter. Alice tried hard to guess, but nobody knew the answer, not even the Hatter. It was always six o'clock there, so it was always tea time. When they tried to push the Dormouse into the teapot, Alice got up and walked away. "That's the most stupid tea party I was ever at in all my life!" she said.
At last Alice reached the beautiful garden. Three gardeners, who were flat, like playing cards, were painting the white roses red. Then the King and Queen of Hearts came by.
The Queen was a terrible woman who shouted "Off with her head!" or "Off with his head!" about almost everyone. She asked Alice to play croquet. It was the strangest game Alice had ever seen. The balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets were live flamingos, and the soldiers had to bend over to make the arches.
Then a cry rang out: "The trial is beginning!" The Knave of Hearts was standing in chains before the King and Queen. He was accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. The Hatter was called as a witness, but he was so nervous that he bit his teacup instead of his bread. Meanwhile, Alice noticed that she was beginning to grow again.
Then the White Rabbit called the next witness: "Alice!" Alice stood up. She had grown so big that she knocked over the whole jury box.
"Let the jury decide," said the King.
"No, no!" said the Queen. "First the punishment, then the decision!"
"Stuff and nonsense!" said Alice loudly.
"Hold your tongue!" cried the Queen, turning purple. "Off with her head!"
Nobody moved. By now Alice was her full size. "Who cares for you?" she said. "You're nothing but a pack of cards!"
At this the whole pack rose up into the air and came flying down on her. Alice gave a little scream and tried to beat them off. And then she found herself lying by the river, with her head in her sister's lap. Her sister was gently brushing away some dead leaves that had fluttered down from the trees onto her face.
"Wake up, Alice dear!" said her sister. "What a long sleep you've had!"
"Oh, I've had such a curious dream!" said Alice. And she told her sister all about her wonderful adventures.
