Once upon a time there was a sweet little girl. Everyone loved her, but her grandmother loved her most of all. Grandmother once gave her a little cap of red velvet. The girl liked it so much that she wore it every day, so people called her Little Red Cap.
One day her mother said, "Little Red Cap, your grandmother is sick. Take her this cake and this bottle of wine. Go straight there, and don't leave the path."
Grandmother lived in the forest, half an hour from the village. When Little Red Cap entered the forest, she met a wolf. She didn't know he was a wicked animal, so she wasn't afraid.
"Good morning, Little Red Cap," said the wolf. "Where are you going so early?" "To my grandmother's house. She is sick, and I'm taking her some cake and wine." "Where does she live?" "Under the three big oak trees."
The wolf thought, "The old woman will be a nice meal, and the girl will be even better." He walked beside her for a while. Then he said, "Look at all these beautiful flowers! Why don't you look around? You're walking so fast."
Little Red Cap saw the sunlight dancing through the trees and flowers everywhere. "Grandmother will be happy if I bring her some flowers," she thought. So she left the path to pick them.
Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to Grandmother's house and knocked. "Who's there?" "Little Red Cap. I've brought you cake and wine."
"Just lift the latch. I'm too weak to get up." The wolf went in and swallowed the old woman whole. Then he put on her nightcap, lay down in her bed and closed the curtains.
When Little Red Cap arrived, the door was open. She felt strange. She went to the bed and opened the curtains. There lay Grandmother with her cap pulled down over her face.
"Oh, Grandmother, what big ears you have!" "So I can hear you better, my dear." "Oh, Grandmother, what big eyes you have!" "So I can see you better."
"Oh, Grandmother, what big hands you have!" "So I can hold you better." "But Grandmother, what a terribly big mouth you have!" "So I can eat you better!" And the wolf jumped out of bed and swallowed Little Red Cap, too.
Then the wolf lay down and began to snore loudly. A hunter was passing by. "How loudly the old woman is snoring," he thought. "I'd better see if she is all right." He went in and found the wolf.
"Maybe he swallowed the grandmother," he thought. "Maybe I can still save her." So he took a pair of scissors and carefully cut open the sleeping wolf's stomach. Out jumped Little Red Cap! "Oh, it was so dark in there!" Then out came Grandmother, alive.
Little Red Cap quickly brought big stones, and they filled the wolf's stomach with them. When the wolf woke up and tried to run away, the stones were so heavy that he fell down and never got up again.
Grandmother ate the cake, drank the wine and soon felt better. And Little Red Cap said to herself, "I will never leave the path again when my mother tells me not to."
