One summer day, the bear and the wolf were walking in the forest. The bear heard a bird singing beautifully. "Brother Wolf, what bird is that?" he asked.
"That is the King of the Birds," said the wolf. "We must bow to him." But really, it was only a tiny bird called the willow-wren.
"Then I want to see his royal palace," said the bear. "Take me there." Soon the King and Queen came with food in their beaks and began to feed their babies. The bear wanted to go and look right away, but the wolf held him back. "No, you must wait until they leave."
The bear could not wait, and after a short time he went back. The King and Queen had just flown out, so he looked into the hole where the nest was. Five or six baby birds were lying there.
"Is this the royal palace?" cried the bear. "What a poor palace! And you are not the King's children. You are nobody's children!" The young wrens were terribly angry. "We are not! Our parents are honest birds! Bear, you will be sorry!"
The bear went home, but the young wrens cried and shouted. When their parents brought food, they said, "We will not eat even one fly's leg until you show that we are good children! The bear came here and insulted us!"
"Don't worry," said the old King. "He will pay for this." He flew with the Queen to the bear's cave and called in, "Old Growler, why did you insult my children? You will be sorry. We will go to war with you!"
The bear called all the animals with four legs: oxen, donkeys, cows, deer, and many more. The wren called everything that flies in the air: big birds and small birds, and also gnats, hornets, bees, and flies.
The wren sent the gnat, the cleverest of his spies, to find out who the enemy's leader was. She flew into the forest where the enemy was meeting and hid under a leaf.
The bear called the fox to him. "Fox, you are the cleverest of all the animals. You will be our general." "Good," said the fox. "But we need a signal. Look at my long, bushy tail. It looks like a red feather. When I hold my tail up high, all is going well, and you must run forward. But if I let it hang down, run away as fast as you can."
The gnat heard all of this. She flew back and told the wren everything.
When morning came, all the four-legged animals came running. They made so much noise that the earth shook. The wren and his army came flying through the air, humming and buzzing. Then the wren sent the hornet down. "Fly under the fox's tail and sting him as hard as you can!"
At the first sting, the fox jumped, but he kept his tail high. At the second sting, he had to drop it for a moment. At the third sting, he could not stand it any more. He cried out and put his tail between his legs.
When the animals saw that, they thought, "Everything is lost!" They all ran away, each into its own hole. The birds had won the war.
The King and Queen flew home. "Children, eat and drink! We have won!" But the young wrens said, "We will not eat yet. First the bear must come to our nest, say sorry, and say that we are good children."
So the wren flew to the bear's cave. "Growler, come to my children's nest and say you are sorry! Or you will be very sorry!" The bear was so frightened that he crept to the nest and said sorry. At last the young wrens were happy. They ate and drank and had a wonderful party until late at night.
