King Lear of Britain was more than eighty years old. He was tired of ruling, so he decided to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. He called them before him. "Tell me which of you loves me most," he said. "The one who loves me most will get the biggest part."
ブリテンのリア王は、八十歳を超えていました。国を治めるのに疲れた王は、王国を三人の娘たちに分けることにしました。王は娘たちを自分の前に呼び集めて、言いました。「おまえたちのうち、誰がいちばんわしを愛しているか、言ってみよ。いちばん愛している者に、いちばん大きな領地を与えよう」
The oldest daughter, Goneril, spoke first. "I love you more than my eyes, more than space and freedom, more than life itself." The second daughter, Regan, said, "My sister has said only a little. I love you even more. Your love is my only joy." The old king was very pleased, and he gave each of them a third of his kingdom.
長女のゴネリルが、まず口を開きました。「わたしはお父さまを、自分の目よりも、広い世界や自由よりも、命そのものよりも、愛しております」次女のリーガンは言いました。「姉の言葉では、まだまだ足りません。わたしは、もっと愛しております。お父さまの愛だけが、わたしのただひとつの喜びです」年老いた王はたいそう喜んで、二人にそれぞれ、王国の三分の一を与えました。
Then he turned to his youngest daughter, Cordelia. She was his favorite. "What can you say to win a bigger part than your sisters?" he asked.
それから王は、末の娘のコーディリアのほうを向きました。王がいちばんかわいがっている娘です。「姉たちより大きな領地をもらうために、おまえは何と言うかね？」と王はたずねました。
Cordelia knew that her sisters did not really love their father. Their words were only flattery. "Nothing, my lord," she said quietly. "I love you as a daughter should love her father, no more and no less. If my sisters love you so much, why do they have husbands?"
コーディリアは知っていました。姉たちは本当は父を愛してなどいない、あれはただのお世辞なのだと。「何もございません、お父さま」とコーディリアは静かに言いました。「わたしは、娘として当然の分だけ、お父さまを愛しております。それより多くも、少なくもありません。もし姉たちがそれほどお父さまを愛しているのなら、なぜ結婚などしたのでしょう？」
Lear was furious. "Then let your honesty be your only gift!" he shouted. He gave her part of the kingdom to her two sisters. The good Earl of Kent tried to defend Cordelia, but Lear banished him too. The King of France loved Cordelia, so he married her even without land or money. "Take care of our father," Cordelia told her sisters sadly, and she went away to France.
リアは激しく怒りました。「ならば、その正直さだけを、おまえの持参金にするがよい！」と王はどなりました。そしてコーディリアの分の領地を、二人の姉に与えてしまいました。善良なケント伯爵がコーディリアをかばおうとしましたが、リアは伯爵まで国から追放してしまいました。フランス王はコーディリアを愛していたので、領地もお金もないコーディリアを妻に迎えました。「お父さまを大切にしてください」とコーディリアは悲しそうに姉たちに言い、フランスへ去っていきました。
Lear planned to live with his two daughters in turns, with one hundred knights to serve him. But he soon learned the truth. Goneril complained about his knights and told him to send half of them away. Lear went to Regan, but Regan said that he did not need even one knight. "I gave you everything!" cried the old man. The two sisters shut their doors against him.
リアは、百人の騎士にお供をさせて、二人の娘のところで代わる代わる暮らすつもりでした。けれども、まもなく本当のことを思い知らされました。ゴネリルは父の騎士たちに文句をつけ、半分は帰してしまうようにと言いました。リアはリーガンのところへ行きましたが、リーガンは、騎士など一人もいらないでしょうと言うのです。「わしは、おまえたちに何もかも与えたのだぞ！」と老人は叫びました。二人の姉妹は、父を締め出して、門を閉ざしてしまいました。
It was a wild, stormy night. Lear rushed out onto the open heath. The rain poured down, and the thunder roared. Only his faithful Fool stayed with him, and a rough servant named Caius. This was really Kent in disguise. He had come back to serve the king who had banished him. Lear shouted at the storm until his mind broke, and he went mad.
荒れ狂う嵐の夜でした。リアは、さえぎるもののない荒れ野へ飛び出していきました。雨はどしゃぶりで、雷がとどろいていました。王のそばに残ったのは、忠実な道化と、ケイアスという荒っぽい召使いだけでした。この召使いは、じつは変装したケントでした。自分を追放した王に仕えるために、戻ってきたのです。リアは嵐に向かって叫び続け、とうとう心がこわれて、正気を失ってしまいました。
Kent sent news to Cordelia in France. When she heard how her sisters had treated their father, she wept. She came to Britain with a French army to help him. Her soldiers found Lear wandering in the fields, wearing a crown of wild flowers.
ケントは、フランスにいるコーディリアに知らせを送りました。姉たちが父にどんな仕打ちをしたかを聞いて、コーディリアは泣きました。そして父を助けるために、フランスの軍勢を連れてブリテンへやって来ました。コーディリアの兵士たちは、野の花で作った冠をかぶって野原をさまよっているリアを見つけました。
When the old king woke up in Cordelia's tent, he did not know at first where he was. Then he saw her face. "Please do not laugh at me," he said. "I am a very foolish, fond old man. I think this lady is my child Cordelia." He fell to his knees. "If you have poison for me, I will drink it. Your sisters had no reason to hate me, but you have a reason. Please, forget and forgive."
コーディリアのテントで目を覚ました老王は、はじめ、自分がどこにいるのかわかりませんでした。やがて、コーディリアの顔が目に入りました。「どうか、わしを笑わないでくれ」と王は言いました。「わしは、ひどく愚かで、ぼけてしまった老いぼれだ。このご婦人は、わしの子のコーディリアだと思うのだが」王はひざまずきました。「わしに飲ませる毒があるなら、飲もう。おまえの姉たちには、わしを憎むわけなどなかった。だが、おまえにはある。どうか、忘れて、許しておくれ」
"No reason, no reason," said Cordelia, and she kissed him. For a short time, they were happy together.
「わけなど、ありません。わけなど、ありません」とコーディリアは言って、父に口づけしました。しばらくのあいだ、二人は一緒に幸せに過ごしました。
But the sisters' army won the battle, and Lear and Cordelia were sent to prison. A wicked man named Edmund, whom both sisters loved, gave a secret order for Cordelia to be killed. Meanwhile, the jealous Goneril poisoned her sister Regan, and then she killed herself. Edmund, too, was killed in a fight.
けれども、戦いに勝ったのは姉たちの軍でした。リアとコーディリアは、牢屋に入れられてしまいました。エドマンドという悪い男がいました。姉妹は二人とも、この男を愛していたのです。エドマンドは、コーディリアを殺すように、ひそかに命令を出しました。一方、嫉妬にかられたゴネリルは妹のリーガンを毒で殺し、それから自分も命を絶ちました。エドマンドもまた、決闘で殺されました。
The order to save Cordelia came too late. Lear came out of the prison carrying his daughter in his arms. She was dead. "Her voice was always soft, gentle and low," he said. Then the old king's heart broke, and he died beside the one daughter who had truly loved him.
コーディリアを助けよという命令は、間に合いませんでした。リアは、娘を両腕に抱いて、牢屋から出てきました。コーディリアは死んでいました。「この子の声は、いつもやわらかく、やさしく、静かだった」と王は言いました。そして老王の心は張り裂け、本当に自分を愛してくれたただ一人の娘のそばで、息を引き取りました。
