When you love your art, no work seems too hard. That is what this story is about.
Joe Larrabee came from a small town in the Middle West. He was a gifted painter. When he was six, he drew a picture of the town pump, and everyone said he was a genius. At twenty he left for New York with a thin wallet and a big dream.
Delia Caruthers came from a village in the South. She played the piano so beautifully that her family collected money and sent her to New York to study music.
Joe and Delia met in New York, fell in love, and soon got married. They rented a small apartment. They were very happy, because they had their art and they had each other. Joe studied painting with a great teacher named Magister. Delia studied the piano with a famous teacher named Rosenstock.
But lessons with great teachers are expensive, and soon their money began to run out.
One evening Delia came home excited. "Joe, dear," she said, "I have a pupil! She's General Pinkney's daughter, Clementina. They live in a beautiful house on Seventy-first Street. I'll teach her three times a week, and they'll pay me five dollars a lesson. Isn't that wonderful?"
Joe did not like it. "I don't want you to work while I play with paint," he said. "I'll sell newspapers or break stones on the road."
But Delia held his arm. "No, Joe. You must keep studying with Magister. Teaching music is still music. And fifteen dollars a week will make us comfortable."
So Joe kept painting, and Delia went out to teach. She came home tired but smiling. She told Joe stories about Clementina, a sweet, delicate girl who always wore white, and about the General, a kind old man.
One Saturday evening Delia proudly put fifteen dollars on the table. Then Joe, with a big smile, put eighteen dollars next to it.
"I sold a painting," he said. "A man from Peoria saw it in a shop window and bought it. And he wants another one, a picture of the train station in winter. Art is not dead after all!"
"I'm so glad you kept painting," said Delia happily. "Fifteen dollars and eighteen dollars! Thirty-three dollars! We've never had so much money."
For the next few weeks they lived well. Delia taught Clementina, and Joe sold more paintings to the man from Peoria.
Then one evening Delia came home with her right hand wrapped in a big white bandage.
"What happened to your hand?" asked Joe.
Delia laughed, but it was not a real laugh. "Oh, it's nothing," she said. "After the lesson, Clementina wanted to make cheese toast. She is so delicate! She spilled the hot cheese on my hand. It hurt a lot. But the General was so kind. He ran downstairs and brought some oil and cotton for it."
Joe took her hand gently and looked at it. Under the bandage he saw the cotton and the oil. "Delia," he said quietly, "how long have you been working at the laundry?"
Delia's face turned red, and her eyes filled with tears. "Don't be angry, Joe," she said. "I couldn't find a pupil. I didn't want you to stop studying with Magister. So I got a job ironing shirts in a big laundry on Twenty-fourth Street. Today a girl put a hot iron on my hand by mistake. Clementina and General Pinkney are not real. I made them up. But how did you know?"
"Because the cotton and oil came from me," said Joe. "This afternoon someone called down for help. A girl in the ironing room upstairs had burned her hand. I sent the cotton and oil up to her. You see, I work in the same laundry. I keep the fire burning in the engine room downstairs. I've been working there for two weeks."
"Then the man from Peoria..."
"He's not real either, just like General Pinkney," said Joe with a smile. "We both made up our stories."
They both began to laugh. Then Joe said, "When you love your art, no work seems..."
But Delia stopped him with her hand on his lips. "No," she said softly. "Just 'When you love.'"
