Long ago, in the green forest of Sherwood near the town of Nottingham, there lived an outlaw named Robin Hood. With him lived a band of brave men: big Little John, who was the tallest of them all, jolly Friar Tuck, and many others. They dressed in green so that they could hide among the trees.
Robin and his Merry Men took money from rich lords and greedy churchmen who traveled through the forest. Then they gave it to the poor people who had nothing. Because of this, the poor loved Robin, but the rich hated him. And nobody hated him more than the Sheriff of Nottingham.
The Sheriff had tried many times to catch Robin, but Robin was always too clever for him. One day, the Sheriff had an idea. "Robin Hood is the best archer in England," he said, "and he is very proud of it. If I hold an archery contest, he will not be able to stay away. And when he comes, I will catch him."
So the Sheriff sent messengers to every town and village. "There will be a great archery contest in Nottingham," they announced. "The winner will receive a prize, an arrow made of pure gold!"
The news soon reached Sherwood Forest. Robin's eyes shone when he heard it. "A golden arrow!" he said. "I must win it."
"Don't go, Robin," said Little John. "It is a trap. The Sheriff only wants to catch you. There will be soldiers everywhere."
Robin laughed. "I know it is a trap," he said. "But I will go anyway. The Sheriff will look for a man in green. So I will not wear green."
On the day of the contest, the field outside Nottingham Castle was full of people. Archers had come from all over the country. The Sheriff sat on a high wooden seat, with his soldiers all around him. His eyes moved over the crowd. "Look for a man in green," he told his men. "Look for a tall man with a proud face."
But the Sheriff did not notice one archer in the crowd. He wore an old brown coat full of holes, like a beggar. He had a long, dirty beard, and one of his eyes was covered with a patch. He walked with his back bent, like a tired old man. The other archers laughed at him. "Go home, old beggar," they said. "This contest is for real archers."
The contest began. The target was far away at the end of the field. One by one, the archers shot their arrows. Many missed the target completely. Some hit the outside of it. Only a few came near the center. Each round, the target was moved farther back, and more archers were sent home.
At last, only two archers were left. One was the Sheriff's best soldier, a famous archer. The other was the old beggar with one eye. The crowd went quiet. The soldier pulled back his bow and shot. His arrow flew through the air and hit the very center of the target. The crowd cheered loudly. "Nobody can do better than that!" they said.
The beggar stepped forward. Slowly, he pulled back his bow. He closed his good eye for a moment and then opened it. Then he let the arrow fly. It flew straight to the target and hit the soldier's arrow right in the end, splitting it into two pieces from end to end. For a moment, there was complete silence. Then the whole crowd roared.
The Sheriff was surprised, but he kept his promise. He gave the golden arrow to the old beggar. "You are a fine archer," he said. "Why don't you work for me as a soldier? It is better than being a beggar." The beggar bowed low. "Thank you, sir," he said in a rough voice, "but I like to be free." And he walked away with his prize.
The Sheriff was angry all evening. "Robin Hood did not come," he said to his men. "He was afraid."
That night, as the Sheriff was eating his dinner, an arrow flew in through the window and stuck in the table in front of him. Tied to it was a small piece of paper. With shaking hands, the Sheriff opened it and read: "Thank you for the golden arrow. It was the old beggar who won it. Your friend, Robin Hood."
The Sheriff's face turned red, then purple. He shouted and stamped his feet. But Robin was already far away, deep in Sherwood Forest, laughing with his Merry Men around the fire.
