Thor was the strongest of all the Norse gods. He had a red beard, a loud voice, and a very short temper. His greatest treasure was his hammer, Mjolnir. When he threw it, lightning flashed and thunder shook the sky, and then the hammer always flew back into his hand. With it, he protected the gods and the people of Earth from the giants.
One morning, Thor woke up and reached for his hammer. It was not there. He looked under his bed. He looked in every room of his great hall. It was gone. Thor shook his red beard and shouted so loudly that the mountains trembled. "Loki!" he roared. "Somebody has stolen my hammer!"
Loki was a clever and tricky god who often caused trouble. But this time, it was not his fault. "I will find out who took it," he said. He borrowed a magic coat of feathers from the goddess Freyja, turned into a bird, and flew far away to the land of the giants.
There he found Thrym, the king of the giants, sitting on a hill. He was making golden collars for his dogs and combing the manes of his horses.
"Hello, Loki," said Thrym with a smile. "How are things with the gods?"
"Very bad," said Loki. "Have you hidden Thor's hammer?"
"Yes, I have," said the giant proudly. "I have buried it eight miles under the ground. Nobody will ever get it back, unless they bring me Freyja, the most beautiful of the goddesses, to be my wife."
Loki flew back to Thor and told him the news. The two of them went straight to Freyja. "Put on your wedding dress," said Thor. "You are going to marry a giant."
Freyja was so angry that the walls of the hall shook. Her famous golden necklace broke and fell to the floor. "Do you think I would marry a giant?" she shouted. "Never! Not for all the hammers in the world!"
All the gods came together to discuss the problem. Without the hammer, the giants would soon attack. Then Heimdall, the wise watchman of the gods, spoke. "I have an idea," he said. "Let us dress Thor as the bride. We can put a long veil over his face and Freyja's necklace around his neck. Then he can go to the giant's hall and get his hammer back himself."
Thor's face turned as red as his beard. "Me? In a dress?" he said. "Everyone will laugh at me!"
"Be quiet, Thor," said Loki. "If you do not get your hammer back, the giants will soon be living here in our home. I will go with you and dress as your maid."
So, in the end, Thor agreed. The goddesses dressed him in a long white wedding dress. They put the necklace around his thick neck, a pretty cap on his head, and a long veil over his face. Loki dressed as a maid. Then the two of them drove to the land of the giants in Thor's chariot, pulled by two goats.
Thrym was delighted. "Get everything ready!" he told his servants. "Freyja is coming to be my bride!" That evening, there was a great wedding feast.
The bride sat down at the table and began to eat. First, she ate a whole ox. Then she ate eight large salmon. Then she ate all the sweet cakes that were meant for the women. After that, she drank three barrels of mead.
Thrym stared. "I have never seen a bride eat so much," he said.
Loki, the clever maid, answered quickly. "Freyja was so excited about her wedding that she has not eaten anything for eight days and eight nights."
Thrym smiled, and he lifted the veil a little to kiss his bride. But he jumped back in surprise. "Why are Freyja's eyes so fierce?" he cried. "They are burning like fire!"
"She was so excited about her wedding," said Loki, "that she has not slept for eight days and eight nights."
The giant was happy with this answer. "Bring in the hammer!" he called. "It is our custom to put a hammer in the bride's lap to bless the wedding."
The servants carried in the great hammer and laid it on the bride's lap. As soon as Thor felt Mjolnir in his hands, he laughed out loud. He threw off his veil and stood up, huge and terrible. Lightning flashed through the hall. With a few swings of his mighty hammer, Thor knocked down Thrym and all his giant guests, and not one of them stood up again.
Then Thor and Loki drove home in the chariot. Thor took off the wedding dress as quickly as he could. And for the rest of his life, he never wanted to hear another word about it.
