One cold February day, a stranger walked through the snow into the little English village of Iping. He was wrapped from head to foot. He wore a big hat, thick gloves, and dark blue glasses. His whole head was covered with white bandages, and only his shiny pink nose could be seen. He walked into the Coach and Horses inn and said, "A room and a fire!"
Mrs. Hall, the owner of the inn, was very pleased to have a guest in winter. But the stranger was not friendly. He never took off his hat or his gloves. He ate his meals alone with the door locked. "He must have had a terrible accident," Mrs. Hall told her husband. "Poor man. His face must be badly hurt."
Many boxes arrived for the stranger, full of bottles and glass tubes. He worked with them day and night, and his room smelled of strange chemicals. Sometimes the villagers heard him shouting angrily. Soon people began to talk. "He's a criminal hiding from the police," said one. "No, he's a madman," said another.
Then strange things began to happen. Money disappeared from the house of the village priest in the middle of the night. The priest heard someone moving in his study, but when he looked, the room was empty. He heard a sneeze in the hall, yet he saw nobody there.
Mrs. Hall was tired of the stranger. He had not paid his bill for days. One morning, she went to his room and asked for her money. The stranger jumped up in anger. "You don't understand who I am!" he shouted. He pulled off his nose, and it fell on the floor. Then he tore off his bandages and his glasses. Mrs. Hall screamed and ran. There was nothing inside the man's clothes. He had no head at all!
A policeman came to arrest him. "Arrest me? Then catch me!" laughed the stranger. He pulled off his gloves, his shirt, and all his clothes. Now he was completely invisible! The policeman held on to something he could not see, but he was knocked down. The invisible man ran out of the inn, laughing, and disappeared.
The invisible man needed help. He found a poor tramp named Thomas Marvel sitting by the road. "I'm invisible," said a voice in the air. "You will help me, or I'll hurt you." Frightened, Marvel had to carry the invisible man's notebooks for him. But soon Marvel ran away with the books. He hid in an inn in a seaside town. The angry invisible man came after him, and someone shot at him. He escaped, but he was wounded.
Late that night, the invisible man went into the house of Dr. Kemp, a scientist. "Kemp, it's me, Griffin," he said. "We studied together at university." Kemp was shocked, but he gave him food and a bed. Then Griffin told him his story.
"I was studying light," said Griffin. "I found a way to make things invisible. First I tried it on a cat. Then I tried it on myself. I thought I would be the most powerful man in the world. But it was not like that at all. My clothes could be seen, so I had to go naked in the cold winter streets. People walked into me. Dogs could smell me. Even the food I ate could be seen inside me until my body took it in. I was cold, hungry, and alone."
Griffin's eyes, which nobody could see, were burning with anger. "But now I have a plan," he said. "With your help, Kemp, I will rule this country by fear. People will obey me, or they will die. It will be a Reign of Terror!" Kemp listened quietly. But he knew that Griffin had gone mad. While Griffin was sleeping, Kemp secretly wrote a letter to the police.
The next morning, the police came to the house. Griffin understood what Kemp had done. "You traitor!" he shouted. He fought his way out and escaped. Then he sent Kemp a letter. "This is the first day of the Terror," it said. "And the first person to die will be you, Kemp."
Kemp tried to help the police catch Griffin, but the invisible man attacked the house. Kemp ran out and down the hill toward the town, shouting for help. He could hear quick footsteps right behind him. At the bottom of the hill, an invisible hand grabbed him and threw him to the ground.
But the workmen of the town came running. "Hold him! I've got his legs!" someone shouted. They could not see Griffin, but they could feel him. They fell on him all together. At last Kemp cried, "Stop! He's not moving."
Slowly, something began to appear on the ground. First they saw thin white lines, then pale skin. Little by little, the body of a young man became visible. His hair was white and his eyes were red. He was dead. Someone covered him with a sheet, and the crowd went quietly away.
Thomas Marvel kept Griffin's notebooks. Later he opened a little inn and called it "The Invisible Man." Late at night, when the inn is closed, Marvel sometimes takes out the notebooks and looks at the secret writing inside. "What a clever man he was," he says. But he cannot understand a single page.
