Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, a cold and cruel place for poor people in England. His young mother kissed him once, and then she died. Nobody knew her name. So the little baby had no family and no name, until a man named Mr. Bumble gave him one. He called him Oliver Twist.
オリバー・ツイストは、救貧院で生まれました。救貧院というのは、イギリスで貧しい人たちを住まわせていた、冷たく、むごい場所です。若いお母さんは、生まれた赤ちゃんに一度だけ口づけをすると、そのまま息を引き取りました。お母さんの名前を知る人は、誰もいませんでした。そのため、小さな赤ちゃんには家族も名前もありませんでしたが、やがてバンブルという男が名前をつけました。オリバー・ツイスト、と。
The boys in the workhouse were always hungry. They were given only three small bowls of thin gruel a day. One evening, the boys chose Oliver to ask for more. He walked up to the master with his bowl and spoon. "Please, sir," he said, "I want some more." The master could not believe his ears. Oliver was locked in a dark room, and then he was sent away to work for an undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry.
救貧院の男の子たちは、いつもおなかをすかせていました。一日にもらえるのは、うすいおかゆが小さなおわんに三杯だけです。ある晩、男の子たちは、おかわりを頼む役にオリバーを選びました。オリバーはおわんとスプーンを持って、院長のところへ歩いていきました。「すみません」とオリバーは言いました。「もう少し、ください」院長は、自分の耳が信じられませんでした。オリバーは暗い部屋に閉じこめられ、そのあと、サワベリーという葬儀屋のところへ働きに出されました。
At the undertaker's house, an older boy named Noah Claypole bullied him every day. One day, Noah said terrible things about Oliver's dead mother. Oliver, who was usually quiet, became wild with anger and knocked him down. He was beaten for it. That night, Oliver ran away. He walked for seven days, all the way to London.
葬儀屋の家では、ノア・クレイポールという年上の少年が、毎日オリバーをいじめました。ある日、ノアは、亡くなったオリバーのお母さんのことを、ひどく悪く言いました。ふだんはおとなしいオリバーも、このときばかりは怒りで我を忘れ、ノアをなぐり倒しました。そのために、オリバーはむちで打たれました。その夜、オリバーは逃げ出しました。そして七日間歩き続けて、はるばるロンドンまでたどり着いたのです。
In London, he met a quick, clever boy called the Artful Dodger. "I know a gentleman who will give you a place to sleep for nothing," said the Dodger. He took Oliver to a dirty old house, where an old man named Fagin was cooking sausages. There were many boys there. Fagin was friendly and gave Oliver food. Oliver did not know that Fagin was a leader of thieves, and the boys were pickpockets.
ロンドンで、オリバーは「ずる賢いドジャー」と呼ばれる、すばしこくて頭の回る少年に出会いました。「ただで寝かせてくれる紳士を知ってるぜ」とドジャーは言いました。ドジャーはオリバーを、汚い古い家へ連れていきました。そこでは、フェイギンという老人がソーセージを焼いていました。家には、男の子がたくさんいました。フェイギンは愛想がよく、オリバーに食べ物をくれました。オリバーは知らなかったのです。フェイギンが泥棒の親分で、男の子たちがすりだということを。
A few days later, Oliver went out with the Dodger and another boy. He watched in horror as they took a handkerchief from an old gentleman's pocket. Then they ran. The gentleman turned and saw Oliver. "Stop, thief!" everybody shouted, and they chased Oliver down the street and caught him.
数日後、オリバーは、ドジャーともう一人の少年と一緒に、町へ出かけました。そして、二人が年とった紳士のポケットからハンカチを抜き取るのを見て、ぞっとしました。二人は駆けだしました。紳士が振り向くと、そこにオリバーがいました。「泥棒だ、捕まえろ！」とみんなが叫び、通りでオリバーを追いかけて、捕まえてしまいました。
But the gentleman, Mr. Brownlow, saw that Oliver was innocent. He took the sick boy home and cared for him. For the first time in his life, Oliver was safe and loved. In Mr. Brownlow's house, there was a picture of a beautiful young woman. Strangely, her face looked very much like Oliver's.
けれども、その紳士、ブラウンローさんは、オリバーが無実だとわかってくれました。そして、病気になっていたオリバーを家に連れて帰り、看病してくれました。生まれて初めて、オリバーは安心して暮らせ、かわいがってもらえたのです。ブラウンローさんの家には、美しい若い女の人の肖像画がかかっていました。不思議なことに、その顔はオリバーにそっくりでした。
Fagin was afraid that Oliver would tell the police about the thieves. So he sent a young woman named Nancy and a violent man named Bill Sikes to find him. One day, when Oliver was walking alone on an errand, they caught him and took him back to Fagin. Mr. Brownlow thought that Oliver had run away with his money.
フェイギンは、オリバーが泥棒たちのことを警察にしゃべるのではないかと恐れました。そこで、ナンシーという若い女と、ビル・サイクスという乱暴な男に、オリバーを探させました。ある日、オリバーが一人でお使いに出たところを、二人は捕まえて、フェイギンのところへ連れ戻してしまいました。ブラウンローさんは、オリバーが自分のお金を持って逃げたのだと思いました。
Sikes made Oliver help with a burglary at a big house in the country. Oliver wanted to warn the family, but he was shot in the arm. Sikes left him in a ditch. The next morning, the wounded boy came back to the same house. The kind Mrs. Maylie and her young niece, Rose, took him in and cared for him. Again, Oliver was happy.
サイクスは、田舎の大きな屋敷に押し入るのを、オリバーに手伝わせました。オリバーは屋敷の人たちに危険を知らせようとしましたが、腕を撃たれてしまいました。サイクスは、オリバーを溝に置き去りにしました。次の朝、傷ついたオリバーは、あの屋敷へ戻っていきました。やさしいメイリー夫人と、その若いめいのローズが、オリバーを家に入れて看病してくれました。オリバーは、また幸せになりました。
But a strange man named Monks was talking with Fagin in secret. Monks wanted Oliver to become a criminal, or even to die. Nancy heard them. She had a hard life, but she still had a good heart, and she felt sorry for Oliver. She went to Rose at night. "Monks is Oliver's half-brother," she said. "He wants to keep all their father's money for himself."
ところが、モンクスという怪しい男が、フェイギンとこっそり相談をしていました。モンクスは、オリバーを悪人にしてしまいたい、いや、死んでしまえばいいとさえ思っていたのです。ナンシーは、その話を聞いてしまいました。つらい暮らしをしてきたナンシーでしたが、やさしい心はなくしていませんでした。オリバーがかわいそうになったナンシーは、夜、ローズをたずねました。「モンクスは、オリバーの腹ちがいの兄さんなんです」とナンシーは言いました。「父親のお金を、ひとりじめしたいんですよ」
Later, Nancy met Rose and Mr. Brownlow on London Bridge to tell them more. But one of Fagin's spies was hiding there and heard everything. When Sikes learned what Nancy had done, he killed her in a terrible rage. Then he ran away, and the police and a great crowd chased him over the roofs. As he tried to escape with a rope, he slipped and died. Fagin was caught and sent to prison, and he was put to death.
のちにナンシーは、もっとくわしく話すために、ロンドン橋でローズとブラウンローさんに会いました。ところが、そこにはフェイギンの手下が隠れていて、何もかも聞いていたのです。ナンシーのしたことを知ったサイクスは、激しい怒りにかられて、ナンシーを殺してしまいました。それからサイクスは逃げ出し、警察と大勢の人々が、屋根の上まで追いかけていきました。ロープを使って逃げようとしたとき、サイクスは足をすべらせて死にました。フェイギンは捕まって牢屋に入れられ、死刑になりました。
Mr. Brownlow found Monks and made him tell the whole truth. Oliver's father had been Mr. Brownlow's old friend. The woman in the picture was Oliver's mother, Agnes. Monks had found her gold locket and thrown it into a river to hide the truth. And there was one more surprise. Rose Maylie was Agnes's younger sister. She was Oliver's aunt!
ブラウンローさんはモンクスを見つけ出し、本当のことを全部話させました。オリバーのお父さんは、ブラウンローさんの古い友人でした。肖像画の女の人は、オリバーのお母さん、アグネスでした。モンクスはアグネスの金のロケットを手に入れ、真実を隠すために、川へ投げ捨てていたのです。そして、もうひとつ驚くことがありました。ローズ・メイリーは、アグネスの妹だったのです。ローズは、オリバーのおばさんでした！
Oliver cried with joy. "I will always call you my sister," he told Rose. Mr. Brownlow adopted Oliver as his own son. The boy who had once begged for a little more gruel now had a home, books, and people who loved him. He never forgot the hard days of his childhood, and he grew up to be a good and gentle man.
オリバーはうれし泣きしました。「ぼく、いつまでもあなたのことを、お姉さんって呼びます」とオリバーはローズに言いました。ブラウンローさんは、オリバーを自分の息子として引き取りました。かつて、もう少しおかゆをくださいと頼んだ男の子に、今では家があり、本があり、愛してくれる人たちがいるのです。オリバーは子どものころのつらい日々を決して忘れず、やさしく立派な大人になりました。
