Long ago, when Duncan was king of Scotland, there was a great lord named Macbeth. He was the Thane of Glamis, and he was a brave general. One day, after he had won a great battle for the king, Macbeth was riding home across a lonely heath with another general, Banquo.
昔、ダンカンがスコットランドの王だったころ、マクベスという身分の高い貴族がいました。グラームズの領主で、勇敢な将軍でした。ある日、王のために大きな戦いに勝ったあと、マクベスは、もう一人の将軍バンクォーと一緒に、人けのない荒れ野を馬で帰っていくところでした。
Suddenly, three strange figures stood in their way. They were old witches with wild hair and wrinkled faces. "Hail, Macbeth, Thane of Glamis!" said the first. "Hail, Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor!" said the second. "Hail, Macbeth, who will be king!" said the third. Then they turned to Banquo. "You will not be a king," they said, "but your children will be kings." Then they disappeared into the air.
突然、三つの奇妙な人影が、二人の行く手に立ちふさがりました。髪を振り乱し、しわだらけの顔をした、年老いた魔女たちです。「万歳、マクベス、グラームズの領主どの！」と一人目が言いました。「万歳、マクベス、コーダーの領主どの！」と二人目が言いました。「万歳、マクベス、やがて王となるお方！」と三人目が言いました。それから魔女たちは、バンクォーのほうを向きました。「おまえは王にはならぬ」と魔女たちは言いました。「だが、おまえの子孫が王になる」そう言うと、魔女たちは、かき消すようにいなくなってしまいました。
Macbeth and Banquo were still talking about this when messengers arrived from the king. "The king has made you Thane of Cawdor," they told Macbeth. So the second promise had already come true! Now Macbeth could not stop thinking about the third. Would he really become king?
マクベスとバンクォーがまだそのことを話しているところへ、王の使いの者たちがやって来ました。「王は、あなたさまをコーダーの領主になさいました」と使いの者たちはマクベスに告げました。二つ目の予言が、もう本当になったのです！ マクベスは、三つ目の予言のことが頭から離れなくなりました。自分は本当に、王になるのだろうか？
Macbeth wrote to his wife about the witches. Lady Macbeth was even more ambitious than her husband. Soon King Duncan came to stay at their castle for the night. "The king must never leave this castle alive," she said. Macbeth was afraid. Duncan was a good king, and he was a guest in their house. "We will not go on with this," he told her. But Lady Macbeth called him a coward. In the end, he agreed.
マクベスは、魔女たちのことを手紙で妻に知らせました。マクベス夫人は、夫よりもさらに強い野心を持った女でした。まもなくダンカン王が、ひと晩泊まるために、二人の城へやって来ました。「王を、生きてこの城から出してはなりません」と夫人は言いました。マクベスは恐ろしくなりました。ダンカンはよい王で、しかも自分の家の客なのです。「この話は、もうやめにしよう」とマクベスは妻に言いました。けれどもマクベス夫人は、夫を臆病者とののしりました。とうとう、マクベスは承知してしまいました。
That night, while everyone slept, Macbeth saw a dagger floating in the air before him. "Is this a dagger which I see before me?" he whispered. Then he went into the king's room and killed him with a real dagger. Lady Macbeth put blood on the faces of the king's sleeping guards, so that people would blame them. Macbeth looked at his bloody hands in horror. "Will all the ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" he said.
その夜、みんなが寝静まったころ、マクベスは、目の前の宙に短剣が浮かんでいるのを見ました。「目の前に見えるのは、短剣か？」とマクベスはささやきました。それからマクベスは王の部屋に入り、本物の短剣で王を殺しました。マクベス夫人は、眠っている見張りの兵たちの顔に、血をぬりつけました。見張りが王を殺したのだと、人々に思わせるためです。マクベスは、血まみれの自分の手を見て、ぞっとしました。「大海の水をすべて使っても、この手の血は洗い流せまい」とマクベスは言いました。
In the morning, the murder was found. Duncan's two sons were afraid that they would be killed too, so they ran away to England and Ireland. People thought that the sons had paid someone to kill their father. So Macbeth was made king.
朝になって、王が殺されているのが見つかりました。ダンカンの二人の息子は、自分たちも殺されるのではないかと恐れ、イングランドとアイルランドへ逃げていきました。人々は、息子たちが誰かにお金を払って、父親を殺させたのだと考えました。こうして、マクベスが王になりました。
But Macbeth could not forget what the witches had said about Banquo. "Banquo's children will be kings, not mine," he thought. So he sent murderers to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance. Banquo was killed, but Fleance escaped.
けれどもマクベスは、魔女たちがバンクォーについて言ったことが、忘れられませんでした。「王になるのはバンクォーの子孫で、わしの子孫ではないのだ」とマクベスは考えました。そこで殺し屋を送り、バンクォーとその息子フリーアンスを殺させようとしました。バンクォーは殺されましたが、フリーアンスは逃げのびました。
That night, Macbeth gave a great dinner for all the lords. When he went to sit down, he saw Banquo's ghost sitting in his chair, covered in blood. Nobody else could see it. Macbeth shouted at the empty chair, and the lords stared at him in fear. Lady Macbeth quickly sent them all home.
その夜、マクベスは貴族たちを招いて、盛大な宴会を開きました。席に着こうとすると、血まみれのバンクォーの幽霊が、自分のいすに座っているではありませんか。ほかの人には、誰にも見えません。マクベスが空っぽのいすに向かってどなるので、貴族たちはおびえて、マクベスを見つめました。マクベス夫人は急いで、客たちをみんな帰らせました。
Macbeth went back to the witches to learn more. They showed him strange visions. "Beware of Macduff," they said. "No man who was born of a woman can harm Macbeth. And Macbeth will never be beaten until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane Hill." Macbeth laughed. Every man was born of a woman, and a forest could not walk! He felt safe.
マクベスは、もっと先のことを知ろうと、もう一度魔女たちのところへ行きました。魔女たちは、マクベスに不思議な幻を見せました。「マクダフに気をつけよ」と魔女たちは言いました。「女から生まれた者は、誰ひとりマクベスを傷つけられぬ。そしてマクベスは、バーナムの森がダンシネインの丘へ攻めのぼってくるまでは、決して敗れぬ」マクベスは笑いました。人はみな女から生まれるものだし、森が歩くはずもありません！ マクベスは、すっかり安心しました。
Still, Macduff had gone to England to join Duncan's son, Malcolm. So Macbeth cruelly killed Macduff's wife and children. Now everyone in Scotland hated him. He had become a tyrant.
それでも、マクダフは、ダンカンの息子マルカムの味方につくために、イングランドへ行ってしまっていました。そこでマクベスは、むごたらしくも、マクダフの妻と子どもたちを殺してしまいました。今では、スコットランドじゅうの人々がマクベスを憎んでいました。マクベスは、暴君になってしまったのです。
Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth had begun to walk in her sleep. Every night, she rubbed her hands as if she were washing them. "Out, damned spot!" she cried. "Here's the smell of the blood still." She could not forget her crimes, and soon she died.
一方、マクベス夫人は、眠ったまま歩き回るようになっていました。毎晩、まるで手を洗っているように、両手をこすり合わせるのです。「消えろ、いまわしいしみ！」と夫人は叫びました。「まだ血のにおいがする」夫人は自分の罪を忘れられず、まもなく死んでしまいました。
Then Malcolm and Macduff came with an army from England. When they passed through Birnam Wood, each soldier cut a branch from a tree and carried it in front of him, so that Macbeth could not count them. From his castle, a guard saw the forest moving toward Dunsinane. Macbeth's heart went cold.
やがて、マルカムとマクダフが、イングランドから軍勢を率いてやって来ました。バーナムの森を通り抜けるとき、兵士たちは一人一人、木の枝を切り取って、体の前にかざして進みました。マクベスに、人数を数えられないようにするためです。城の見張りが、森がダンシネインに向かって動いてくるのを見ました。マクベスの心は、冷たく凍りつきました。
Still he fought, because he believed that no man born of a woman could kill him. Then he met Macduff. "I cannot be killed by any man born of a woman," said Macbeth. Macduff answered, "Then know this. I was not born in the usual way. I was taken early from my mother's body." Macbeth's courage was gone. They fought, and Macduff killed him. Then Malcolm, the true heir, became the king of Scotland.
それでもマクベスは戦いました。女から生まれた者には、自分は殺せないと信じていたからです。そこへ、マクダフが現れました。「わしは、女から生まれた者には殺されぬのだ」とマクベスは言いました。マクダフは答えました。「ならば、教えてやろう。わたしは、ふつうに生まれたのではない。月が満ちる前に、母の体から取り出されたのだ」マクベスの勇気は消えうせました。二人は戦い、マクダフがマクベスを倒しました。そして、正しい跡つぎであるマルカムが、スコットランドの王になったのです。
