Not long ago, learning meant going to a classroom, sitting at a desk, and listening to a teacher. Today, students can learn almost anything, anywhere, at any time, as long as they have a device and an internet connection. Online learning has grown quickly, and it is changing the way people study.
In Japan, an important change came with the GIGA School program. Under this program, the government provided a computer or tablet for every elementary and junior high school student, and by around 2021, almost all schools had them. Students now use their devices to search for information, make presentations, and send their homework to teachers.
The COVID-19 pandemic also pushed online learning forward. When schools across Japan closed in the spring of 2020, many teachers had to teach through video calls for the first time. Many universities held most of their classes online for a year or more. It was a difficult experience, but it showed both the possibilities and the limits of online learning.
Online learning has many merits. First, it is flexible. Students can watch recorded lessons at their own pace, stopping and repeating the parts they do not understand. People who work or take care of family members can study in their free time. Second, it can reach students who live far from big cities, or who cannot easily go to school because of illness or other reasons.
Third, online learning can be very cheap or even free. Many top universities around the world offer online courses that anyone can join. Language learning apps let people practice every day for a few minutes. Some apps use AI to give each student problems that match his or her level. In Japan, online high schools have become popular in recent years, and tens of thousands of students now study at them.
However, online learning also has problems. The biggest may be motivation. Without a teacher and classmates around, it is easy to get distracted or to give up. In fact, only a small percentage of people who start free online courses actually finish them. Students who are not good at managing their own time may fall behind.
Second, online learning makes it harder to build relationships. At school, students learn not only from textbooks but also from talking, arguing, and cooperating with others. They join clubs, eat lunch together, and learn how to get along with people who are different from them. These experiences are difficult to copy on a screen.
Third, there is the digital divide. Not all families have fast internet or a quiet place to study at home. During the school closures, students without good equipment had more difficulty keeping up. Spending many hours looking at screens may also cause eye problems and reduce physical activity.
There is also the question of cheating. With online tests, it is harder to check whether students are working alone. Now that generative AI can write essays and solve problems, teachers must think of new ways to check what students have really learned.
What does research say about how well online learning works? The results are mixed. Some studies have found that students who are already motivated and good at studying alone can learn just as well online. But other studies have found that students who were struggling before often fall further behind when classes move online. In other words, online learning may widen the gap between strong and weak students, unless teachers give extra support.
The role of teachers is changing, too. When students can find explanations online at any time, the teacher becomes less of a person who simply gives information, and more of a coach who guides, encourages, and checks each student's understanding. Many teachers have had to learn new digital skills in a short time, which has been a heavy burden for some of them.
Because of these strengths and weaknesses, many schools are now trying to mix the two styles. This is called blended learning. For example, students may watch a short video lesson at home and then use class time for discussion and group work. This style is sometimes called the "flipped classroom," because it turns the usual order of lessons and homework upside down.
Online learning is also important for adults. As technology changes jobs quickly, many workers need to keep learning new skills throughout their lives. This is sometimes called reskilling. Online courses allow working adults to study programming, languages, or business after work or on weekends, without quitting their jobs.
Online learning is not likely to replace schools completely. But it has become a powerful tool that can make learning more open and flexible for people of all ages, from small children to older people who want to keep learning after they retire.
What do you think? Some people say that online learning is better than classroom learning, because students can study at their own pace, anywhere, and at a low cost. Others say that classroom learning is better, because students can stay motivated and learn to communicate with others face to face.
