Long ago, in the city of Ayodhya in northern India, there lived a good king named Dasharatha. He had four sons by three queens, and the eldest, Rama, was loved by everyone. Rama was brave, gentle, and always honest. He had won the hand of the beautiful princess Sita by doing something no other prince could do. He had lifted and bent the great bow of the god Shiva, so hard that it broke in two with a sound like thunder.
When the king grew old, he decided to make Rama the next king, and the whole city prepared to celebrate. But one of his queens, Kaikeyi, wanted her own son, Bharata, to rule. Long before, when she had saved the king's life in a battle, he had promised to grant her any two wishes. Now she asked for them. "Make Bharata king," she said, "and send Rama into the forest for fourteen years."
The old king begged her to change her mind, but a king's promise could not be broken. It was Rama himself who comforted his father. "Do not be sad," he said. "A son must keep his father's word." He took off his royal clothes and put on the rough bark clothes of a forest hermit.
Sita refused to stay behind. "Where you go, I go," she said. Rama's loyal younger brother Lakshmana came too. As the three of them walked out of the city, the people wept in the streets. Not long after they left, the old king died of grief.
Bharata was horrified when he heard what his mother had done. He went into the forest and begged Rama to come home, but Rama would not break his father's promise. So Bharata carried Rama's sandals back to the city and placed them on the throne. Until his brother returned, he said, he would rule only as Rama's servant.
For many years, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana lived peacefully in the forest, in a small hut beside a river. But the forest was also home to rakshasas, demons who could change their shape. Their king was Ravana, who had ten heads and twenty arms and ruled the island of Lanka across the southern sea. When Ravana heard of Sita's beauty, he decided to take her for himself.
One morning, Sita saw a beautiful deer outside the hut. Its skin shone like gold, and its spots were like silver. "Please catch it for me," she begged Rama. Lakshmana felt that something was wrong, but Rama took his bow and followed the deer deep into the forest. Before he went, he told Lakshmana to guard Sita and not to leave her for any reason.
The deer was really a demon in disguise. When Rama's arrow finally struck it, it cried out in Rama's own voice, "Help me, Lakshmana! Help me, Sita!" Sita was terrified. She begged Lakshmana to go and help his brother. When he refused, she spoke such bitter words to him that at last he went.
As soon as Lakshmana was gone, an old holy man came to the door, asking for food. Sita, who was kind, came out to give him some. At once the old man changed into Ravana, huge and terrible, with his ten heads. He seized Sita, put her in his flying chariot, and rose into the sky.
Sita screamed for help. An old vulture named Jatayu, a friend of Rama's father, flew up and fought bravely to save her. But Ravana cut his wings with his sword, and the old bird fell to the ground. As the chariot flew south, Sita pulled off some of her jewels, tied them in her scarf, and dropped them onto a mountain where some monkeys were sitting. She hoped that someday they would show Rama the way.
When Rama and Lakshmana returned to the empty hut, Rama's grief was terrible. They searched everywhere. At last they found the dying Jatayu, who told them with his last breath that Ravana had taken Sita to the south.
Following his words, the brothers came to the land of the monkeys. There Rama helped the monkey prince Sugriva win back his kingdom, and they became friends. Sugriva showed him the jewels that had fallen from the sky, and Rama knew them at once. Sugriva sent his monkeys out in every direction to search for Sita. The bravest of them all was Hanuman, the son of the Wind.
Hanuman's group traveled all the way to the southern tip of India. There they stood on the shore and stared across the sea. Somewhere far away lay Lanka, but the sea was a hundred leagues wide. No monkey could jump that far.
Then the old bear Jambavan turned to Hanuman. "You are the son of the Wind," he said. "When you were a child, you jumped up to catch the sun because you thought it was a ripe fruit. You have simply forgotten how strong you are."
Hearing these words, Hanuman began to remember. He grew and grew until he was as tall as a mountain. He climbed to the top of a hill and pressed down so hard that the rocks cracked. Then he leaped into the sky and flew over the sea like an arrow.
He landed on Lanka at sunset. Ravana's city was made of gold, with tall towers and shining gardens. To avoid being seen, Hanuman made himself as small as a cat and crept through the palaces all night. Sita was nowhere to be found. At last, in a grove of ashoka trees, he saw a thin, sad woman in a dusty yellow robe, surrounded by demon guards. She was crying, but her face was still beautiful, and Hanuman knew at once that it was Sita.
Hanuman hid in the branches of a tree. Soon Ravana came into the grove. "Forget Rama," he told Sita. "Be my queen, and all of Lanka will be yours. I will give you two more months to decide."
Sita would not even look at him. "I belong to Rama, as sunlight belongs to the sun," she replied. "Send me back to him, if you want to live."
When Ravana had gone and the guards had fallen asleep, Hanuman began to sing the story of Rama softly from the tree. Sita looked up in amazement. Hanuman climbed down, bowed low, and gave her Rama's ring. When she saw it, she held it to her heart and wept for joy.
"Sit on my back," said Hanuman. "I will carry you home now." But Sita shook her head. "It is Rama who must come for me," she said. "Take him this jewel from my hair, and tell him to hurry."
Before leaving, Hanuman decided to give Ravana a warning. He tore up the trees in the royal gardens, and when soldiers came, he defeated them all.
At last he let himself be captured and taken before Ravana. "I am Rama's messenger," he said without fear. "Return Sita, or Lanka will fall." Ravana was furious. "Set fire to the monkey's tail!" he shouted.
The demons wrapped Hanuman's tail in oily cloth and set it alight. But Sita prayed to the god of fire, and the flames did not hurt Hanuman at all. He shrank, slipped out of the ropes, and leaped from roof to roof, his blazing tail setting the golden city on fire. Then he cooled his tail in the sea, made one more great leap, and flew back to Rama with the news.
Rama's army of monkeys and bears marched to the shore. To cross the sea, they built a bridge of stones. It is said that every stone on which the monkeys wrote Rama's name floated on the water. Even a little squirrel helped by rolling in the sand and shaking it off between the stones. Rama gently stroked its back, and some say that is why squirrels in India have stripes.
The battle for Lanka lasted many days. Ravana's brothers and sons fell one by one. Once Lakshmana was badly wounded, and Hanuman flew to the far-off Himalayas to fetch a healing herb. When he could not tell which plant was the right one, he lifted the whole mountain and carried it back.
At last Rama and Ravana faced each other. Each time Rama cut off one of Ravana's heads, a new one grew in its place. Then Rama took out a holy arrow that a great sage had given him. He aimed it at Ravana's heart, and the demon king fell.
Sita was free. The fourteen years were over, and Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana flew home to Ayodhya in a flying chariot, with Hanuman beside them. Bharata ran out to meet them with tears in his eyes and gave back the throne. The people lit rows of little lamps along every street and on every roof to welcome their king home. Many people in India say that this is why they still light lamps every year at the festival of Diwali.
