Long ago, in the kingdom of Madra in India, there lived a good and wise king named Ashvapati. He had everything a king could wish for except one thing: he had no children. For eighteen years he prayed and made offerings to the goddess Savitri. At last the goddess appeared before him in a burst of light. "You will have a daughter," she said, "and she will bring great honor to your family."
Soon a daughter was born, and the king named her Savitri, after the goddess. She grew up to be so beautiful and so wise that people said she was a goddess herself. But that was the problem. When she was old enough to marry, no prince dared to ask for her hand. They were all a little afraid of her.
At last the king said, "My daughter, no one will come to ask for you. So you must go out and choose a husband for yourself." Savitri set out in a golden chariot, with old and trusted advisers to guide her. She traveled through kingdoms and cities, and she visited the forest homes of holy men, which are called hermitages.
After a long time, she returned. Her father was sitting with Narada, a great sage who could see the past and the future. "Tell us, my child," said the king. "Whom have you chosen?"
Savitri answered, "In a forest lives a king named Dyumatsena. He became blind, and his enemies took away his kingdom. Now he lives in a hermitage with his wife and his son, Satyavan. Satyavan is the one I have chosen in my heart."
Narada's face grew dark. "Oh, what a mistake," he said. "Satyavan is brave, kind, truthful, and as handsome as the moon. There is only one problem, but it is a terrible one. One year from today, he will die."
The king turned pale. "Savitri," he said, "go out again and choose someone else." But Savitri answered quietly. "A person chooses only once. Whether his life is long or short, I have given my heart to Satyavan, and I will not choose a second time."
Narada looked at her with respect. "Her mind is firm," he told the king. "Let her marry him."
And so Savitri married Satyavan. She took off her jewels and silk and put on the plain clothes of the forest. She served her blind father-in-law and his wife with love, and she made Satyavan very happy. But the whole time, she was counting the days. She never forgot Narada's words, and she told no one about them.
When only four days were left, Savitri began a fast. For three days and nights she stood without eating or sleeping, praying. Her father-in-law was worried. "This is too hard for you, my daughter," he said. But she would not stop.
On the morning of the fourth day, the day she dreaded, Satyavan picked up his axe to go and cut wood in the forest. "Let me come with you," Savitri said. "I have never seen the forest at this time of year." Satyavan laughed. "You have not eaten for three days," he said, "and the paths are rough." But she insisted, and he could not refuse her.
They walked together through the forest, and Satyavan showed her the flowers, the streams, and the birds. Savitri smiled at him, but her heart was breaking.
When they reached the place where he usually worked, Satyavan began to cut wood. Suddenly he stopped and put his hand to his head. "My head hurts," he said. "I feel weak. I must lie down."
Savitri sat on the ground, took his head in her lap, and held him. She knew that the moment had come. Then she saw a figure standing before her. He was tall and dark, dressed in red, and his eyes were as red as fire. In his hand was a rope.
Savitri gently laid her husband's head on the ground and stood up. "Who are you?" she asked, pressing her hands together. "I am Yama, the lord of death," he said. "Your husband's life is over. Because he is a good man, I have come for him myself."
Then Yama drew out Satyavan's soul, a tiny figure no bigger than a thumb. He tied it with his rope and turned toward the south, the land of the dead.
Savitri followed him. Yama turned around. "Go back," he said. "Go home and perform the rites for your husband. You cannot come where I am going."
"Wherever my husband goes, I must go," she replied. "That is the ancient duty of a wife. The wise say that if two people walk seven steps together, they become friends. We have walked far more than seven steps, so let me speak to you as a friend."
Then she spoke about goodness and duty, and about how good people protect the weak even when it costs them something. Her words were so wise that Yama was pleased. "Your words are beautiful," he said. "Ask me for anything, except your husband's life."
Savitri said, "Then give my father-in-law back his sight." "It is done," said Yama. "Now go back. You look tired."
But Savitri kept walking. "How can I be tired, when I am with my husband?" she said. "And to spend even a little time with a good person is a great blessing."
Again Yama was pleased, and he offered her a second gift, anything except Satyavan's life. She asked that her father-in-law's kingdom be returned to him. "It is done," said Yama. "Now go home."
Still she followed, and still she spoke, so gently and wisely that the lord of death was moved. He gave her a third gift: a hundred sons for her own father, who had no son.
And still she walked behind him. "You are called the King of Justice," she said. "People trust the good even more than they trust themselves." "No one has ever spoken to me like this," said Yama. "Ask for one more gift, anything but his life."
Savitri looked straight at him. "Then let me have a hundred sons of my own," she said, "strong and brave sons, by Satyavan." Without thinking, Yama said, "It is done. You will have a hundred sons."
Then he stopped. Savitri spoke again. "My lord, you have given your word. But how can I have sons by Satyavan if he is dead? Your gift cannot come true unless he lives."
Yama looked at her for a long moment, and then he smiled. He untied his rope. "Good lady," he said, "you have won. I set your husband free. He will live with you for four hundred years." Then he went on toward the south and disappeared.
Savitri ran back to the place where Satyavan lay. She sat down and took his head in her lap again. Slowly his eyes opened, as if he were waking from a long sleep. "I slept so long," he said. "Why did you not wake me? And who was that dark man who was taking me away?"
"I will tell you tomorrow," said Savitri. "It is night now, and your parents will be worried. Let us go home."
They walked back through the dark forest, Satyavan leaning on her shoulder. At the hermitage, they found everyone in great excitement. The old king could see again! And before morning, messengers arrived from the city. The enemy who had taken the kingdom was dead, and the people wanted their rightful king to return.
Only then did Savitri tell everyone what had happened in the forest. The holy men listened in wonder. Everything that Yama had promised came true. Savitri and Satyavan lived a long and happy life together, and for thousands of years, people in India have honored Savitri as the woman whose love and wisdom were stronger than death.
